School of Allied Health Sciences and Public Health
The mission of the School of Allied Health Sciences and Public Health is to provide higher level education in public health and other supporting disciplines in medical science, conduct research to promote and protect health, and participate in community health services. The mission includes the dissemination of knowledge and skills, the development of new technologies and maintenance of a high level of professional standards in order to achieve the optimal health status of Thai population. The Institute offers a range of undergraduate courses, covering four main areas: Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Environmental Health, and Occupational Health and Safety. The School also offers three graduate programmes: Master of Public Health, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences.
Undergraduate Programmes
1. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology
Degree Title: Bachelor of Science (Medical Technology)

Programme Philosophy
This programme aims to produce graduates in Medical Technology with high professional and ethical standards, a highly developed sense of social responsibility, and a humanitarian concern for other people. Students acquire up-to-date professional knowledge and modern technological skills required of health professionals in their field of study and practice. Teaching and learning are conducted in the University's classrooms and laboratories as well as in hospitals and health clinics. Graduates of this programme will be able to work independently or as a member of a team of health care professionals to provide high quality service to the community.
Programme Profile
The professional part of the programme comprises 5 groups of subjects: Microscopy and Hematology, Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Clinical Chemistry, and Blood Banking. As a prerequisite for the study of professional subjects students are required to take introductory courses in Physical Science, Liberal Arts, Information Technology, and basic Medical Science courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Biochemistry. Students also take part in a practical work experience programme for one trimester during which they gain work experience in the real world of professional employment.
Since their professional careers after graduation will involve personal contact with people requiring health care and support, prospective students for this programme should be willing to work hard and have a strong sense of responsibility and care for the people to whom they will be providing professional services.
Career Opportunities
After registration with the Ministry of Public Health, the graduates from this programme are officially certified to work as Medical Technologists in public and private hospitals, laboratories, and health centres. They may also find employment as a member of a research group in the field of medical science.
Postgraduate Study Opportunities
Graduates from this programme are qualified to enrol in postgraduate programmes in Medical and Health Sciences at various Thai and overseas universities. Masters and Doctoral study programmes are offered in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Microscopy, Hematology and Blood Banking, Pathology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Toxicology, Environmental Health, and Nutrition.
2. Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy

Program Philosophy
The aim of Walailak University's recently opened Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy is to produce graduates with the knowledge, ability and a high level of expertise in the areas of physical therapy and health promotion, and the prevention and the effective treatment of bodily injury. The program instills in students a sense of ethical responsibility and high professional standards. It aims to train students to be able to adapt theoretical knowledge in order to become leaders in this field in the southern region and to meet international standards. Students will study in conjunction with professional groups in the health sciences so that through their studies they will gain valuable experience in working efficiently as a team. Students who choose this programme of study should have an aptitude for conducting research and seeking new knowledge.
Programme Profile
This programme emphasises both theory and practice in various fields of applied science including the structure and function of the human body; physical therapy for muscular and skeletal disorders; physical therapy for the nervous system; physical therapy for the cardiovascular and respiratory system; physical therapy for geriatrics; sports physical therapy; physical therapy management for specific conditions; and general education courses focusing on society, language, mathematics, statistics, science, and computers and especially information technology, designed to give students a broad knowledge foundation. Before graduating and entering the workforce students are also required to take part in work experience programs in public and private hospitals. Students who choose this programme should be able to work with a high attention to detail, be highly motivated, patient, and willing to work in the service of others, since most graduates will be involved in working with patients in hospitals. Students interested in a research career should have a keen interest in the discipline and an inquiring mind.
Career Opportunities
Graduates in this field can apply for registration to practice in the field of physical therapy from the Ministry of Public Health. They may work as physical therapists, scientists, medical scientists in public or private hospitals, or work independently, e.g. open a clinic (in accordance with the 1999 Therapeutic Practices Act), or work as sales representatives or agents and importers of medical equipment and medicines for laboratories.
Postgraduate Study Opportunities
Students who take this program can continue their studies at the Masters or Doctoral level, either nationally or internationally, in various fields of medical science including physical therapy, anatomy, and physiology.
3. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health

Programme Philosophy
As optimal health and wellbeing relates directly to a healthy environment, the focus of this programme is to enable students to understand the causal relationship between the environment and human health, and how to manage and modify the environment in order to achieve and maintain optimal health and well-being for the community. Graduates of this programme will have a good understanding of all the environmental factors that impact upon human health, and the procedures required for effective management of the environment in relation to health promotion and maintenance. He/she will be able to work independently or as a member of a team of health care professionals to provide high quality service to the community.
Programme Profile
Prior to taking the professional subjects students are required to take introductory courses in Health Science, Liberal Arts, and Information Technology. The professional part of the programme comprises the following subjects: Air and Noise Pollution and Control, Water and Wastewater Analysis, Wastewater and Solid Waste Treatment, Environmental Toxicology, Food Sanitation, and Environmental Health Assessment. The study of several of these subjects involves many hours of experiments in laboratories as well as data collection fieldwork by students. Students also take part in a practical work experience programme for one trimester during which they gain work experience in the real world of professional employment.
Students who wish to take this programme should be able to study and work effectively in various learning situations including the classroom, laboratory, and outdoors.
Career Opportunities
Graduates from this programme may work for the government as Environmental Health Scientist. Employment opportunities are also available in the private sector in such area as environmental quality control. He/she may also find employment as a member of a research group in the field of medical science.

4. Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health and Safety

Programme Philosophy
The program aims to produce highly trained health professionals who will be responsible for promoting and maintaining health and safety in the workplace.
Programme Profile
Prior to undertaking the professional subjects, students are required to take introductory courses in Health Science, Liberal Arts, and Information Technology. The professional part of the program includes the following subjects: Principles of Industrial Hygiene, Principles of Safety at Work, Industrial Hygiene Sampling and Analysis, Industrial Hazards and Accident Prevention, and Occupational Medicine. Many of these courses require that students spend a substantial amount of time doing experiments in laboratories. Students also take part in a practical work experience program for one trimester during which they gain work experience in the real world of professional employment.
Students who wish to take this program should have good human relationship skills and be able to study and work effectively in different learning situations.
Career Opportunities
A graduate from this program is professionally qualified to work as Occupational Health and Safety Officer in both the public and private sectors.
Postgraduate Study Opportunities
A graduate from this program is qualified to enroll in postgraduate programs in Health Sciences at various Thai and overseas universities. The masters and doctoral study programs are offered in Occupational Health, Toxicology, Safety Engineering, Public Health, and Public Health Management.
