3. Master of Arts Programme in Southeast Asian Studies
MASTER OF ARTS PROGRAM IN SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES
SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS, WALAILAK UNIVERSITY
WHY SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES?
As globalization has accelerated the process of global integration Southeast Asia has assumed a position of ever greater importance to Thailand’s international political and economic strategy. Thailand has played an important role as a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), and the proposed ASEAN Community, due to be established by 2015. Thailand has close economic relations with the Southeast Asia, as well as longstanding historical, social and cultural ties.
Today the countries of the Southeast Asian region face many significant challenges. Sustainable responses need to be jointly found among the countries of the region to meet these challenges. For these reasons research and scholarship into the major issues that are confronting the Southeast Asian region are a priority.
Formerly the field of Southeast Asian Studies was developed primarily in academic institutions in the West. The study of Southeast Asia thus naturally reflected the questions, assumptions, and the perspectives of Western scholars and the priorities of the countries in where they worked. However, today the study of Southeast Asia is developing rapidly in the Southeast Asian region itself. Southeast Asian universities, as well as the regional organization ASEAN, are increasingly promoting scholarship and research into Southeast Asia out of a desire to find solutions to the many problems facing the people of the Southeast Asian region. Owing to its position in southern Thailand, in the juncture between mainland and archipelagic Southeast Asia, Walailak University provides an ideal location to study this dynamic region.
REGIONAL STUDIES PROGRAM (SOUTHEAST ASIA)
The Regional Studies Program was set up within the School of Liberal Arts to study Thailand’s southern neighbours, Malaysia and Indonesia, and more broadly the Southeast Asian region. The program offers a bachelor degree program in Southeast Asian Studies, where students take courses on Southeast Asian politics, history, society, economy, culture, and international relations, as well as Malay and Indonesian language. As part of their degree program students are expected to spend at least one term studying in Malaysia or Indonesia. All students must also take part in a Cooperative Education program, in which students spend one term gaining work experience in an organization related to their study program.
RESEARCH STRENGTHS
Research strengths of staff in the Regional Studies Program (Southeast Asia) include: Southern Thai Studies; Patani Malay History and Literature; Malayness; the Islamic Revival in Southeast Asia; Southeast Asian Film; Ethnicity in Myanmar; Thai History, Politics and Cultural Studies; the Thai Diaspora; Indonesian Politics and Social Movements; and Gender and Sexuality in Thailand.
