Research & Academic

Research carried out by University faculty and graduate students is focused primarily on computer science, environmental science, experimental physics, computational sciences, and gives particular attention to areas that are of direct social and economic benefit to the southern region of Thailand, including wood science and engineering, Black Tiger prawns farming, orchard farming, bio-diversity, extracting natural products and herbal medicines from plants, etc. Research in the humanities and social sciences covers issues in the Muslim majority southern border provinces, cultural traditions in the south, Southeast Asian studies (especially Indonesia and Malaysia), and local resource management in the southern region.

The University also promotes academic services to the local community. Such services include supporting the local economy and businesses by helping nurture small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as providing financial assistance to local communities to help in poverty alleviation. 

 

 

Research Units and Centers of Excellence 

 

For research strengths, researchers work together as single discipline groups and cross discipline groups to develop research units which are aimed at research sustainability and research excellence. There are ten Research Units and Centers of Excellence as follows: 

 

 

Regional Studies Research Unit

focuses on studying and conducting research in Southeast Asia communities in terms of their religious, cultural, economic and political issues in order to establish collaborations and strengthen good relationship among Southeast Asian Countries.

   

Tropical Fruit Research

Unit aims to develop research studies, produce intellectual postgraduates, set up academic networks, and provide academic resources about tropical fruit and academic services to community.

   

Molecular Technology Research Unit

with its own objectives to encourage and support the academic members to develop their research works to reach an international standard. New generations of the researchers are also trained to be professional researchers with well understanding of up-to-date science and technology. The research unit also aims to develop technology to solve local problems, transfer research knowledge to other institutes or local organizations as well as build research networks in and outside Thailand. Wood Science and Engineering Research

Unit has its own purposes to provide leadership in research and development of wood which is directly applicable to the improvement of Thai economy. In addition, the research unit conducts academic seminars and training programs in collaboration with the wood-using industry to facilitate academic research and to transfer knowledge of wood science and engineering to the society. Plasma Technology for Agricultural Applications Research Unit

aims to support and enhance the quality of teaching and research in physics among Thai universities, with the target of world-standard education and training in physics to promote sustainable development in key technologies of the 21st century. An additional function of the center is to show that the academic physics community is willing to back up local industries with a supply of well-prepared graduates and innovative ideas. Center of Excellence for Ecoinformatics

develops computer software and network to serve Ecoinformatics macro data base and its application packages for web-based mathamatica expert system. In addition, the center establishes new research network and develop Ecoinformatics services, expanding automatic and human-based measurements of physical and biological sensors to cover all possible areas by displaying data in both quantitative and qualitative for recognition of climate change.   • Green Innovation in Physics for Agro-Industry Research Center of Excellence aims to support and enhance the quality of teaching and research in physics among Thai universities, with the target of world-standard education and training in physics to promote sustainable development in key technologies of the 21st century. An additional function of the center is to show that the academic physics community is willing to back up local industries with a supply of well-prepared graduates and innovative ideas.
   
  • Research Center of Excellence on Shrimp develops shrimp genetic for application in the production of the highest quality of shrimp as well as transfers knowledge to shrimp farmers in community.
   
  • Biomedical Science Research Unit with its objective to apply knowledge of biology, micro-biology, pharmacology, immunology, hematology, medical biochemistry, molecular genetics, nutrition, physical therapy, and exercise medicine, in conducting research to find new body of knowledge for understanding causes of disease and its process that will benefit for medical diagnosis, disease prevention and health care taking.    
 
  • Utilization of Natural Products Research Unit conducts research on utilization of full range of natural products e.g. natural dyes, oil plants, and natural extracts. Transferring research findings and technology to communities and promoting novice researchers in related fields. 
 
  • Biodiversity Research Unit continues its missions for exploring high biodiversity areas and hotspots especially in Southern Thailand’s natural settings both on land and in marine realms. The research unit also assesses emerging threats to wildlife and ecosystems through collaborative research, and to use scientific findings to advance environmental awareness.
 
  • Renewable Energy Research Unit focuses on renewable energy of Nakhon Si Thammarat and upper southern provinces. The researchers look into bio-fuel, biomass energy, wind energy, renewable energy production control system technology, engineering management technology for efficiency of using renewable energy in production, and clean technology in environment-friendly production.
 
  • Informatics Innovation Research Unit has its missions to invent new computer software and algorithm and develop computer hardware systems in order to reduce importation from overseas. In addition, the research unit provides academic services to other institutions for further development.    
 
  • Consumption and Sustainable Economy Research Unit aims at conducting national and international research on consumption and sustainable economy for commercial benefits and academic services to public and private sectors in the southern. 
 
  • Geological Disaster Research Unit has its aim to conduct research on about geological disaster and publicize body of knowledge to community located in the risk areas of Nakhon Si Thammarat and nearby provinces for preparation and prevention of disaster to reduce lives and assets lost. In addition, the research unit also aims to collaborate with public and private sectors as well as national and international educational institutions for creating a network and being a center providing information and research on geological disaster in the future.
