Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University (WU) and members of WU executive on the 9th of October 2018 received a visit from senior executives of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IU-PUI) led by Professor Dr. Nasser H. Paydar, the IUPUI’s Chancellor.



The nine-member high-level delegation from IUPUI, a top university in the US, held talks with its counterpart, led by Professor Sombat, on issues of mutual interests and ways that IUPUI could assist WU in its plans to develop further build capacity of WU teaching and research staff, to strengthen research training for postgraduate students, and to internationalize WU curricula and student learning. The talks also included programs to exchange staff and students. WU looks towards receiving professors from IUPUI as visiting professors. Other possible collaborations could also include WU students doing joint degrees with IUPUI and enrolling in courses at IUPUI via Course Networking digital facility. Further discussions will be held between the two universities to work out details of collaborations.

Chancellor Professor Paydar and his Executives also toured the WU Campus, including the “Hub of Smart Classrooms” and Moot Court, the construction site of the Walailak University Hospital Center, the newly completed “Walailak Park” – now dubbed the “Paradise of the Thasala residents”.

WU President, Professor Dr Sombat treated the IUPUI visit as something special to him. It was the first ever visit by such a high-level delegation from a world class university since his assumption of WU Presidency two years ago. Professor Sombat also has a very strong bond with IUPUI. He first went to Indiana University in 1987 as a year-long PhD exchange student. Then in 1993, he returned to IU-PUI as a visiting scholar, and in 2013, Professor Thamrongthanyawong received an honorary doctorate from Indiana University.
