Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College (AVC), Walailak University work together with local veterinarian for help the elephant





Somchok, a male elephant aged 35 years old, was shot 3 times with 11 mm. pistol and have 2 bullets embedded at the right and left front limbs. Another shot at the trunk has pierced through.

The local veterinary officer asked for help from Walailak University's animal hospital to send a veterinarian (Dr.Rattapan Pattanarangsan) to work as a team for this case along with two veterinarians from Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya and a private veterinary clinician from Phromkiri Veterinary Clinic.

The veterinary team investigated the gun-shot wounds with a metal detector, field x-ray and found that the bullets at the legs were embedded deep at the bone thus cannot pull out on the field site. The team recommended the elephant owner to send the elephant to The southern elephant hospital of Thai Elephant Conservation Center under the Royal Pathronage, Krabi province. Before the movement, the veterinary team performed wound dressing and gave antibiotic drug with pain killer drug for the elephant.
