Walailak University makes a success of sustainability in the THE Impact Rankings

Walailak University’s (WU) commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been recognised in the latest version of the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings which in 2021 included 1,240 institutions across all SDGs.

First published in 2019, the University Impact Rankings seek to measure the progress of the global higher education sector against the 17 SDGs; these were first released in 2015 by the UN with the aim of promoting more sustainable development and living.

WU submitted data on 7 of the 17 SDGs and we are particularly pleased to report that in three of them SDG2 – No Hunger, SDG6 – Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG14 – Life Below Water, the University has been ranked 201-300. The overall ranking of 601-800 places WU equal 15th among the universities ranked in Thailand, a very strong performance considering that this is the first year we have submitted to the rankings. Indeed, among the 7 SDGs we submitted, the University is ranked in the top 10 universities in Thailand in SDG2, SDG3, SDG6 and SDG14. A complete list of the results may be found at the THE website. https://www.timeshighereducation.com

Professor Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, the President of WU, said ‘I am extremely proud of the hard work of our faculty and staff, it is their research and commitment to the SDGs that have contributed to this fine performance.’
