Walailak University Is Now a Truly World-Class University as It Has Been Ranked by Times Higher Education (THE)


     On 12 October 2022 at 8.00 AM, THE released the results of its rankings which placed Walailak University at 1501+. This translated to 11th rank in Thailand. THE’s World University Rankings (WUR) assessed about 1,800 universities worldwide. In the past year, Walailak University has been ranked in THE Impact Rankings category which placed the University at 600th - 800th, and the QS Asia University Rankings, at 19th among Thai universities.


     Professor. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, the President of Walailak University, congratulated all staff particularly those who work very hard producing world-class publications. Globalizing Walailak University and ensuring that the University is well-recognized worldwide has been the President's key policy platform since his assumption of the presidency in mid-2016.


     “Even though we have been ranked for the first time at 1501+, but we are sure that we will be ranked higher in the years to come. Recently, our works are much more aligned with THE indicators comparing to the beginning. Now, our alumni numbering some 20,000 can be proud of our achievement, and are able to say that our university is now a world ranking university,” said Professor. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong.


     Associate Professor Dr Surin Maisrikrod, a Vice President for WU’s Global Engagement, added that the ranking would help the University’s management and academics see more clearly where Walailak University was in the global context, particularly in terms of research and publications. “Although in the global context, Walailak University still has a long way to go, but this important ranking should help boost the morale of the management and academics as they strive to be better-recognized and play a more significant role internationally. Indeed, for us, this is a big thing,” said VP Surin Maisrikrod.


     THE’s World University Rankings (WUR), the only annual publication to judge research-intensive universities, assessed the university's performance in five areas: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. Having reached several milestones so far, Walailak University will continue to commit to producing high quality graduates with world-class quality teaching and research.
