Walailak University Continues with Krabi Model: Generating Sustainable Income for Farmers

Walailak University continues with Krabi Model for the second year, utilizing knowledge in research, science, technology, and innovation to increase farmers’ income by at least 10,000 baht per month.

     Associate Professor Dr. Siwarit Pongsakornrungsilp, Acting Dean of the School of Management, Walailak University, as the head of Krabi Model Project said on 18 November 2022 that Walailak University is continuing the Krabi Model for the second year. The model received budgetary support from Program Management Unit on Area Based Development (PMUA), and cooperation from top researchers from Walailak University and Prince of Songkla University as well as several organizations in Krabi province. 

     The Krabi Model aims to address poverty issue and provide farmers with sustainable sources of income; improving farmers’ quality of life and supporting the community to be more self-sufficient, particularly through the income from the crop they are growing.

     The implementation of Krabi Model has carried out six projects namely oil palm production optimization, goat farming in palm plantations, aquaculture of feathered algae, production of bamboo mushrooms, development of tie-dye Batik fabrics in Krabi province, and the creation of marketing and branding models. The Krabi Model has maximized production efficiency by increasing oil palm production from 3.5 tons per rai per year to almost 4.5 tons per rai per year and increasing the number of goats in palm plantations from 8 to almost 80 within 2 years while lowering the cost of palm plantation maintenance.

     “I would like to thank all researchers from Walailak University, Prince of Songkla University, organizations in Krabi Province, the member of the House of Representatives, and people in the area for supporting Krabi Model which can be set as an example for other communities. As a resercher and a university lecturer, i am very proud, ” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sivarit.
