The program provides graduates with the knowledge and ability to undertake research on cultural values and practices in local communities and to gain awareness of their effects on social development. A sound working knowledge of the cultural dimensions of social development will be gained through extensive fieldwork, together with study of a comprehensive range of research papers and other academic writing.
Research currently being carried out by staff in the School of Liberal Arts includes the history of ethnic interaction in the southern Thailand and northern Malaysia; Islamic radicalism in Southeast Asia; resource issues among the fishing communities of Pattani; community rights in southern Thailand; the social impact of the development of the Pakpanang river basin; the Thai diaspora in southern Myanmar; and strategies in English language learning.
