On 1st March 2013, Walailak University welcomed the guests of honor, Mr. Mohd. Faizal Bin Razali, Consul General and Mr. Mohd Rozaimi Bin Harun, Consul 1 of the Consulate General of Malaysia, Songkhla, and Mrs. Fifi A.Firdaus, Vice Consul for Social and Cultural Affairs, Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia, Songkhla on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the International Debate Training and Competition 2013.
Both the Consul General for the Malaysian Consulate, Songkhla and the Vice Consul for Social and Cultural Affairs for the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia, Songkhla gave a speech in support of the event in that it enabled the ASEAN students and lecturers to meet in an academic and cultural setting, a university networking activity to be encouraged.
The debate was organized by International Relations Office, Walailak University in association with four universities from Malaysia and one university from Indonesia namely University Putra Malaysia: UPM, Universiti Teknologi Mara: UiTM, Universiti Sains Malaysia: USM, Universiti Malaysia Perlis: UniMAP and Universitas Ibn Khaldun Bogor Indonesia: UIKA.
The main objectives of the debate project were 1) to improve student participants' critical thinking 2) to develop soft skills required for life in the 21st century 3) to get students to overcome their shyness in speaking in public and 4) to assess the level of satisfaction of all stake holders.
With the emergence of the ASEAN Community, there is an urgent need for the development of students in terms of communication skills, which means the ability to communicate effectively. Through this event, the students will get all the benefits as well as culture sharing among participants during 1-3 March 2013.
