Walailak University welcomed its 29th incoming class, Chorpradu 29, comprising 4,556 freshmen - the largest freshman cohort in the University's history - and introduced them to its UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF)-based teaching and learning approach ahead of the start of the first semester on June 15, 2026.

During an orientation session held at the Thaiburi Building on June 4, Assistant Professor Dr. Suthanya Doung-In, Assistant to the President for Teaching and Curriculum Development and Acting Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence, explained how the internationally recognized UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) shapes teaching and learning at Walailak University.

Adopted by universities in more than 27 countries worldwide, the framework promotes active learning, critical thinking, and engagement between students and lecturers. At Walailak University, the framework serves as a foundation for designing learning experiences that equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

Addressing the new students, Dr. Suthanya emphasized that learning at Walailak University extends beyond traditional classroom instruction. Through active learning approaches, students are encouraged to participate in discussions, collaborate with peers, analyze real-world problems, and apply knowledge in practical settings.

“Learning is not simply about receiving information from lecturers,” Dr. Suthanya said. “Students are expected to engage actively in the learning process, develop critical thinking skills, and apply their knowledge to solve complex problems.”

She explained that the University's educational philosophy focuses on cultivating both academic excellence and practical expertise. Throughout their studies, students gain hands-on experience through laboratories, fieldwork, and cooperative education programs.

A distinctive feature of Walailak University's approach is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students in their fourth year undertake cooperative education placements, working directly with organizations and applying classroom knowledge in professional settings. These experiences often lead to employment opportunities after graduation.

Dr. Suthanya noted that practical expertise is one of the University's core educational strengths. Through cooperative education and workplace-based learning, students are given opportunities to develop professional competencies and gain firsthand experience before entering the workforce.

She also highlighted the University's strong commitment to English language development. In addition to the 120-hour pre-semester English course completed by freshmen last month, the University provides up to 390 hours of English instruction for first- and second-year students - one of the highest provisions among Thai universities. Classes are taught by international instructors in small-group settings, allowing students to develop their communication skills through close interaction and personalized support.

Supporting this learning environment are more than 170 Smart Classrooms equipped with modern educational technologies. Small class sizes enable lecturers to provide individualized guidance while fostering interaction. General Education classes typically accommodate no more than 40 students, while English language classes are limited to approximately 25 students.

The University also leverages digital technologies to enhance learning. Students can access course materials, announcements, assignments, and learning resources through learning management systems such as e-Learning, Google Classroom, and Moodle.

Under the UKPSF framework, assessment focuses on continuous learning and development. Rather than relying solely on examinations, students receive regular feedback through assignments, projects, and other forms of assessment, helping them identify areas for improvement and strengthen their academic performance.

Addressing the growing role of artificial intelligence in education, Dr. Suthanya stressed the importance of ethical and transparent AI use. Students are encouraged to use AI responsibly while maintaining academic integrity, properly acknowledging AI-assisted work, and adhering to academic citation standards.

She further noted that teaching excellence remains a defining strength of Walailak University. More than 800 academic staff members have completed UKPSF training and certification, contributing to the University's reputation as a national leader in teaching and learning quality.

As the new academic year approaches, Dr. Suthanya encouraged students to embrace every opportunity for learning and personal growth throughout their university journey.

“I wish all of you success in your studies. Make the most of your time at Walailak University, study to the best of your ability, and enjoy your university life,” said Dr. Suthanya.
