Overview: Working towards international recognition for excellence
Walailak University (WU) is a comprehensive and research-intensive university located in a southern historic province of Nakhon Si Thammarat. WU is committed to producing quality graduates through myriad areas of disciplines undertaken by 14 schools covering up to 46 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate fields of expertise in science, engineering, agriculture, biotechnology, informatics, management, liberal arts and social science, together with three international colleges. The university is dedicated to advancing education measuring up to the global standards as demonstrated through being an early adopter of the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) designed to ensure exceptional teaching and learning. Currently, 463 of our lecturers have been certified as fellows, senior fellows and principal fellows, accounting for 98.70 percent. The highest in Thailand.
We strive to enhance education through research-inspired and contemporary pedagogical practices in consistency with 21st century skills. Our students acquire knowledge and skills through hands-on experiences using comprehensive learning facilities including cutting-edge laboratory, Smart classroom and other educational innovations. With the goal to become a world-class research university, WU features key Centers of Excellence specializing in Melioidosis, Dengue research, Health System and Medical Research, CE-HSMR, Innovation and health products, and drugs and cosmetics. To cultivate career readiness, all final year students are required to undergo 8-month work placement both domestically and internationally. Over the past five years, there have been 208 students in 15 majors of studies interning in 51 international organization spanning over 15 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. At present, we are also currently home international students and staff from more than 10 countries ranging from an undergraduate level to a doctoral level.
For the first time since its foundation in 1992, WU has now been recognized by international ranking agencies. In 2021, the university is ranked 601st to 800th by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, and the top 551-600 Asian universities by QS Asia University Rankings in 2022. WU is also one of the only 14 universities in Thailand recognized as a Global Frontier Research University, we place a profound emphasis on research and have achieved the 70th overall percentile, 79th research percentile, 51st innovation percentile and 61st societal percentile as documented in SciMago Institution Rankings. Our lecturers in several areas of expertise have recently achieved up to 93 % of publication in the Scopus database and other prestigious recognitions including the World’s Top 2 percent Scientist Ranking by Stanford University.
In terms of the life on campus, WU campus life extols the virtue of its Thailand’s one of the most picturesque greeneries. Students live in a peaceful environment while having access to facilities including the sports complex, tennis and badminton courts and a fitness center. In addition, we actively endorse sustainable development by implementing power-saving and eco-friendly policies. WU students can commute using an electric car service on campus and off campus.
