WU and HSRI sign MOU to advance medicine and public health research in the upper south of Thailand

Walailak University, led by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanwong as President, together with Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI), led by Dr. Nopporn Cheanklin as Executive Director, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Walailak University on 27 October 2020 to strengthen research capacity in medicine and public health in the upper south of Thailand.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanwong said at the signing ceremony that Walailak University continues to develop several of its areas. Currently, teaching and learning activities cover health science, science and technology, and humanities and social sciences. In particular, the field of health science is very strong. Many students from prestigious schools are interested in studying at WU university. Regarding research, Walailak University is a comprehensive research university generating new knowledge, solving problems and engaging with the community. In the past three years, the university has had a leap in international publications.

Additionally, the president says that the medical and public health system is very important. Having maintained close collaboration between WU and HSRI since 2017, he believes that the MOU signals an additional strengthening of the medical and public health research network in the upper south of Thailand.

The MOU signing ceremony is the result of collaboration between both parties' on various approaches related to research capacity strength. This includes improving the capacity of individual researchers through training courses on topics such as starting an article, developing research questions that respond to health problems and establishing a network of researchers in health systems through projects and budget support.

The main goals of the MOU are to support health system researchers in the upper south region of Thailand to build new knowledge, develop research networks, and support new researchers in medicine and public health.
