Walailak University launches new curriculum, “International Medical Technology”

Associate Professor Doctor Jitbanjong Tangpong, the dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, announced that Walailak University is the first university in the south of Thailand to institute two educational programs, Medical Technology and Physical Therapy. For the 2021 school year, the new curriculum, International Medical Technology, will be officially and opened in Thailand and will conduct classes 100% in the English language. This is being done in order to produce students effective in English skills alongside academic excellence and professional practice. This will equip them to be both more capable and marketable graduates not only in Thailand but also worldwide. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which is now occurring and affecting the world’s population, the need for professional practice in the field of medical technology is increasing along with the public health needs of those impacted by the pandemic.
Dr. Jitbanjong said that WU’s new International Medical Technology program advances students to experience and practice by providing three study program choices: predictive medicine skills, research and innovation skills, and entrepreneurial skills. These options, and the ability to choose between them, help prepare students to address the world's present needs while complementing their educational aptitude. They will be trained in using cutting-edge technology for genes, DNA, biomolecules, and other lab tests such as those involving reproductive technology. Also, overseas intern and research scholarships are provided for senior students, including a total budget of 100,000 baht through cooperation with external banner institutes like the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, USA; Far Eastern University, Philippines; and Hunan University of Chinese Medicine, China, enabling students to finish their studies by working elsewhere in the world. Exchange also includes inviting visiting professors from leading institutions of medical technology, both nationally and abroad, to provide more diverse knowledge. The curriculum provides support by offering preparatory activities for students to pass the International Medical Technology Practice Certificate.
In addition to these benefits, Dr. Jitbanjong reported that International Medical Technology, the School of Allied Health Sciences, WU, provides learning under international standards of teaching and learning, namely that of the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework, to instill in students analytical, synthesization, academic and professional skills. The focus is on producing graduates to be both outstanding and proficient personnel. All graduates are expected to will develop into qualified medical technicians who are delicate, careful, and observant. Medical technicians from Walailak University will also be prepared as researchers for the field of medical sciences and related professions.
