Educating the next generation in the SDGs

The growing climate crisis has led to universities around the world looking at what they can do improve sustainability in their communities. Key to addressing this challenge is education and as part of Walailak University’s efforts, Associate Professor Dr. Phimphaka Harding of the School of Science in her first year chemistry class has asked her students to prepare short videos on ‘Chemistry and the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals’. The UN Sustainability Development Goals, or SDGs are a framework designed to create a better, more sustainable future for all.

The students were split into groups with each group given one of the seventeen SDGs which range from SDG1 – No Poverty to SDG4- Quality Education to SDG17 Partnership for the Goals. In making the videos, the students gained a deeper understanding of the SDGs and the impact that chemistry can have on a more sustainable future. Because of the current pandemic, the students have had to work together virtually helping them develop teamworking and online collaborative skills that will be vital for them in their future careers. We encourage you to take a look at the videos they have created here: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfcSi8k2Wy7fk9BHDaq71TUtajTxPpOo-.

The videos are creative, looking at the SDGs in new ways and show the importance of involving our young citizens in the problems of today, so that we can all have a better tomorrow.
