Awards

Walailak University's civil engineering students have won the SSI4YE champion for the second year in a row.

Students from Walailak University's Civil Engineering program earned "the best SSI 4YE 2020 thesis" award, as well as a 50,000-baht prize and a trophy.

Fourth-year Civil Engineering Program students from Walailak University’s School of Engineering and Technology, Ms. Pruksapa Bangrieng, Ms. Tuwaekumarini Toso, Ms. Pakjira Orsai, and Mr. Nattanon Ramanee, with Professor Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanongsak Imjai as their consultant, are the owners of the FSB WU team's work on the efficiency of prestressing composite beams from structural steel mixed with old concrete scrap for thin floor systems. They were awarded the first prize in the SSI 4YE 2020 best thesis contest, a 50,000-baht scholarship, and a plaque. The contest was recently organized by Sahaviriya Steel Industries public company limited (SSI) as part of the Structural Steel Improvement (SSI) for Young Engineers (SSI 4YE) project for the year 2021.

According to Ms. Pakjira Orsai, Team Leader of FSB WU, the award-winning thesis is a test on the prestressing performance of composite beams from structural steel and old concrete mixed for thin floor systems. Furthermore, this project would use the prestressed steel reinforcing system to help decrease the problem of long-span beams deflecting, reduce vibration during usage, and boost the ability to bear bending strength. Therefore, it can be utilized in the construction of hospital garage buildings, shopping malls, offices, and other structures.

She further said that the competition provided a variety of experiences, such as presenting to a panel of experts and displaying their work to raise awareness of Walailak University, as well as applying classroom knowledge, such as the analysis of finite element modelling, which was used to predict the deformation behavior of beams and to tell us how much weight the beams could bear.

"We are overjoyed and proud to have won this award, and we would like to express our gratitude to our thesis adviser, Asst. Prof. Dr. Thanongsak Imjai and the Civil Engineering Program at Walailak University's School of Engineering and Technology, including the research team and private companies, for their advice, direction, and assistance until this project was realized. Furthermore, without the SSI for Young Engineers 2020, it would be impossible to provide students with the opportunity to compete in this competition," Ms. Pakjira stated.

The Structural Steel Improvement for Young Engineers program aims to improve students' steel construction abilities and comprehension by sharing knowledge and experiences through channels such as the SSI4YE Facebook fan page or presentations to university students across the country to participate in thesis project presentations.
