Walailak University’s Center of Excellence in Marijuana, Hemp, and Kratom organized an online seminar on Cannabis and Kratom Management and Health on 28 March 2023. 43 attendees from six countries - Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Ukraine, China, and the Netherlands - joined the event via Zoom.

The Center of Excellence in Marijuana, Hemp, and Kratom invited experts from various fields to speak at the event, including Dr. Chitana Bouthalusay, the Medical Director of Lao Modern Healthcare Group in Laos; Dr. Wang Xiaonan from the Institute of Bast Crops, Daqing Branch of Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences in China; Dr. Sakan Warinhomhoun from the School of Medicine and the Center of Excellence in Marijuana, Hemp, and Kratom at Walailak University; Dr. Iryna Layko, Head of the Department of Hemp Selection and Seed-growing from the Institute of Bast Crops of the National Ukrainian Academy of Agriculture Sciences in Ukraine; and Duncan Macrae from Kratom Bio Company Limited.

During the seminar, Dr. Chitana discussed how she uses Marijuana to treat patients with various types of cancer. She noted that the majority of her patients have responded well to the treatment. Dr. Sakan presented on the safety and efficacy of Kratom for metabolic syndrome, sharing the latest data on Kratom use for treating patients with Diabetes, Hypertension, and Dyslipidemia.

In Thailand's upper south, Kratom has been used in folk medicine to treat various diseases, such as Diabetes and Dyslipidemia. A research study has shown that when Kratom extract is used with Mitragynine and Acarbose (an anti-diabetic drug) to treat Diabetes, the effectiveness of treatment increases compared to using Acarbose alone. The research suggests that Mitragynine helps reduce blood sugar levels and has the potential to be developed into a future herbal medicine. Moreover, an experiment conducted in vivo on rats showed that Nigella sativa Oil, when consumed for 28 days, helped decrease inflammation and wounds in their stomach and stimulated the secretion of Mucin.
