AITC2023: Walailak University Hosts Annual International Training Course on Good Air Quality with PM 2.5 Sensors and IoT

Center of Excellence for Ecoinformatics, School of Science, Walailak University, organized an online Annual International Training Course (AITC) on Good Air Quality with PM 2.5 sensors and IoT from 1 – 19 May 2023. More than 90 students from 27 countries participated in the course.

Annual International Training Course or AITC was launched in 1991 under the supervision of Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the focus on five themes plus one:  Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP), Public Health, Climate Change and Environmental Issues, Agriculture and Food Security, Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model and others (SDGs). Not only the AITC offers a training opportunity for participants from around the world but also a chance to share ideas and establish professional connections. 

Associate Professor Dr. Mullica Jaroensutasinee, Dean of the School of Science at Walailak University, revealed that the issue of air pollution is a major health problem affecting people irrespective of their country of residence. Specifically, inhaling PM2.5, or tiny particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 microns, present in the air can cause health problems in both short and long run. 

"At the Center of Excellence for Ecoinformatics, School of Science, we have over 10 years of experience in sensor technology and IoT. We specialize in utilizing air quality index data for PM2.5 control and prevention," said Dean Mullica. "The online training course on Good Air Quality with PM2.5 sensors and IoT will raise awareness, impart knowledge and management skills, and disseminate and replicate best practices for controlling and mitigating PM2.5, which will help in reducing health risks and improving quality of life," she added.

The online training course at Walailak University has more than 90 participants from 27 countries, such as Georgia, Tanzania, Kenya, the Philippines, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan, attending via Google Meet. The diverse group of participants includes doctors, engineers, ecologists, and government officials. To receive an e-certificate, participants must attend at least 80% of the course and complete a post-evaluation demonstrating their application of the knowledge gained.

Not only this training course demonstrates the university's commitment to fostering an international perspective but also reflects its effort to address global challenges as a world-class university and research-intensive institution in Thailand. As of the latest update on research publications on 22 May 2023, 87.67 percent of the university's research publications are in Scopus-indexed journals quartile 1 and quartile 2, marking the highest percentage in the country.
