Walailak University Strengthens Academic and Research Collaboration with Showa University, Japan

Walailak University’s School of Allied Health Sciences (SAH) recently welcomed three professors from Showa University, led by Professor Yoshinori Kagaya from the Department of Rehabilitation, to strengthen collaboration.

The delegation from Showa University attended the SAH International Conference (SAHIC) 2024, held virtually on March 25, 2024, under the theme "New Trends for Quality of Life in Medical Technology and Physical Therapy."

During the SAHIC 2024 event, interesting talks were delivered, including "Development of Laboratory Methods for Detecting Natural Toxins in Biological and Food Samples" by Professor Dr. Kohki Okada from Kyoto Tachibana University, Japan; "Contribution of Platelets to Cancer-Associated Thrombosis and Cancer Progression" by Professor Dr. Ching Ping Tseng from Chang Gung University, Taiwan; "Genomic Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus suis" by Associate Professor Dr. Anusak Kerdsin from the Faculty of Public Health, Kasetsart University, Thailand; "Evidence-Based Physical Therapy: Role in Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation for Parkinson's Disease" by Dr. Hiroyuki Ohtsuka from School of Nursing and Rehabilitation Sciences, Showa University, Tokyo; and "The Occiput-Bed Distance for Measuring Hyper kyphosis in Community-Dwelling Older Adults" by Dr. Roongnapa Intarak from Walailak University.

On March 26, 2024, the Showa delegation paid a courtesy visit to Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, at the Honor Hall of Walailak University Hospital. On this occasion, Professor Sombat briefed the delegates about the progress of Walailak University, particularly in research. The university’s efforts in collaborating with international researchers and its commitment to advancing research resulted in the 2023 Excellence Award for Internationally High-caliber Research from the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), Thailand, on January 10, 2024.

During the collaboration discussion at the Chorpradu Chamber on March 26, SAH, led by Associate Professor Dr. Voravuth Somsak, Dean, proposed the exchange of students, both inbound and outbound, to enhance students’ academics and allow them to learn from different cultures. He also plans to invite Showa University’s professors to deliver special lectures in physical therapy for the elderly and physical therapy in sports for SAH students.

“During the foundation day of Walailak University, we are honored to have professors from Showa University joining us. They are our network working on advancing academics and research. They attended our school’s international conference yesterday and will also join us at the Walailak Research Convention 2024, which will be held this week,” said Dean Voravuth Somsak.

Additionally, the two parties commit to advancing their collaborative research project on local motive syndrome in the elderly and will work together to expand to other areas.

Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Vice President of Walailak University, said, “there are many areas that we can collaborate, particularly the School of Allied Health Sciences; they have international programs. We are very grateful that you continue to maintain a strong relationship with us.”

Previously, in August last year, 14 students from Showa University joined “the Global Multi-Professional and Cultural Camp 2023,” co-organized by SAH and Walailak Center for International Affairs. The students learned medical case studies from community patients, and the distinctions and commonalities in health systems between the two countries.
