On 30 August 2024, a delegation from Walailak University (WU) International Affairs Task Force paid a courtesy call to H.E. Ms. Millicent Cruz Paredes, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, and Susan Phoebe R. Sabado, Third Secretary and Vice Consul, Head of Economic and Cultural Sections, at the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Bangkok. The visit aimed to foster international collaboration and highlight WU’s achievements in research excellence, contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and its broader commitment to global well-being.
The WU delegation, which included Dr. Suthasinee Sangkhum, Assistant to the President; Assistant Professor Dr. Chantira Wongnen, Deputy Dean of the School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry; Dr. Suchita Manajit, Deputy Dean of Walailak University International College (WUIC); and Assistant Professor Dr. Shubham Pathak, Assistant Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, engaged in discussions with the embassy representatives on potential partnerships and opportunities for academic collaboration.
During the meeting, the WU delegation emphasized the university’s 19 international postgraduate programs and the availability of scholarships to support human resource development in the Philippines. Discussions also explored educational and research collaboration, particularly in the areas of people-to-people cooperation, exchange student programs, and PhD grants.
The embassy expressed strong interest in WU’s Krabi Model research project, which promotes carbon-neutral tourism in Krabi province and surrounding areas, as well as the university’s SDG achievements. As the current leader of the Women Ambassadors Group in Thailand, Ambassador Paredes also took note of WU’s contributions to sustainable development and its impact on local communities.
Additionally, the embassy highlighted the success of Filipino professionals in Thailand, especially in nursing and English language teaching, and discussed the possibility of a visit to WU in the near future to further enhance bilateral ties.
