Welcoming event at the Honor Hall, WU Hospital
Counsellor Sonari M. Uraih from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria visited Walailak University (WU) today. The aim was to explore educational collaboration opportunities between WU and Nigerian institutions. The visit follows a courtesy call by the WU International Taskforce to the Nigerian Embassy at the end of last month.
Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of WU, said during the event at Honor Hall that WU is ready to collaborate with Nigerian institutions to enhance the quality of education provided to students. The university also offers scholarships to international students, which cover tuition fees and a monthly allowance.
Collaborations being discussed included the provision of international programs at WU at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, student exchange opportunities at WU International College, master’s degree scholarships funded by Thailand International Cooperation Agency, and the exchange of knowledge and best practices in smart farming, which could benefit agricultural sector.
During the meeting, Counsellor Sonari had an opportunity to meet with WU executives and representatives from the School of Public Health, School of Science, School of Pharmacy, School of Engineering and Technology, Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College, and the College of Graduate Studies. She also had the chance to speak with international students from Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ethiopia who are currently studying at WU.
In the previous year, WU actively promoted student mobility, both inbound and outbound, with over 320 students participating in exchange programs. Currently, WU is home to 207 students from 28 countries, studying at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Over the past four years, nearly 50 percent of the university’s research has partnered with international researchers, leading to the university recently receiving the Outstanding Award for Excellence in Internationally High-Caliber Research conferred by Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. As of 31 August 2024, 91.4 percent of WU’s publications are in Scopus-indexed journals, in Quartiles 1 and 2.
