WU Strengthens Partnership with UniMAP to Develop Dual Degree Programs for Postgraduates and Advance Research



Walailak University (WU) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) have strengthened their partnership to advance academic and research initiatives for students and global communities. The collaboration between the two institutions focuses on fostering endeavors such as the development of dual degree programs for postgraduates, mobility for students and staff, joint research, co-organization of conferences, and internships.

A delegation from UniMAP, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato' Ts. Dr. Zaliman Sauli, included Dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering and Technology (FKTA) Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Che Zulzikrami Azner Abidin, Director of the Center for International Engagement Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Umi Fazara Md. Ali, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phak Len Eh Kan from the FKTA. The delegation visited WU to discuss further academic collaboration and participate in the official ceremony for the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The event took place at the Honor Hall and the Chorpradu Chamber of WU Hospital.



Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of WU, expressed his deep appreciation for the partnership, stating, “It is my great honor as President of Walailak University to warmly welcome the delegates to our campus. Your visit reflects the strong and enduring partnership between UniMAP and Walailak University.”

“This visit represents a pivotal moment in strengthening our collaboration. Our colleagues from the School of Engineering and Technology, School of Informatics, School of Management, and the International College are also here today to work with their UniMAP counterparts in advancing key initiatives such as credit mobility programs, dual degree programs, and joint research.” 

On this occasion, he also proposed the inclusion of adjunct lecturer exchanges and co-supervision of graduate students to enhance international staff mobility and foster greater collaboration between the two institutions.

Prof. Dato' Ts. Dr. Zaliman Sauli shared his admiration for WU’s achievements, facilities, and advancements, particularly the School of Engineering and Technology’s (SET) expertise in Civil Engineering and Petrochemical and Polymer Engineering.

He remarked: “We celebrate the collaboration between UniMAP and Walailak University. The MoU is a testament to our shared mission in academics, research, and innovation to unlock opportunities not only for our universities but also for students and communities.”

He added: “We aim to develop joint postgraduate programs that allow students to earn degrees from both UniMAP and Walailak University. This collaboration will foster a global academic perspective and equip our graduates to thrive in an interconnected world. Credit mobility programs for undergraduates will provide them with the experience of immersing in diverse academic environments, broadening their horizons, adaptability, and resilience. Additionally, internship programs will enhance students’ practical knowledge and prepare them to excel in their careers.”

Prof. Dato' Ts. Dr. Zaliman expressed his firm belief that the partnership between UniMAP and WU will serve as a shining example of what two institutions can achieve when united by shared goals, creating meaningful opportunities for students, driving impactful research, and contributing to the betterment of society.



The renewed MoU between WU and UniMAP was signed by WU President Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong and UniMAP Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato' Ts. Dr. Zaliman Sauli in the presence of Dean of WU SET Assoc. Prof. Dr. Monthian Setkit and UniMAP Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Shukry Abdul Majid.

During the academic discussions, WU representatives proposed potential areas of collaboration, such as SET’s joint publication and teaching initiatives, the School of Informatics’ international short course and media project development, the School of Management’s student and staff mobility program and research initiatives, and the International College’s exchange program.

Established in 2001, UniMAP is a leading university in Malaysia, renowned for its excellence in engineering and advanced facilities. The university has approximately 13,000 students and is currently ranked at 1501+ by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking. Meanwhile, Walailak University, founded in 1992 and recognized as a research-intensive university by Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, also has around the same number of students and is ranked 1201-1500 by THE.

WU and UniMAP share strong ties in advancing academics and research. Last year, UniMAP delegates participated in SET’s International Forum on Construction Innovation and Sustainable Materials. And currently, WU students are also participating in internship programs, known as Cooperative Education, at UniMAP.
