Walailak University Excels in Five Subjects Ranked Among Top Universities by Times Higher Education, with Best Performance in Medical and Health and Social Sciences at 601–800 Worldwide



Walailak University has excelled in five subjects ranked among the top universities worldwide in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject, evaluated across 11 subject areas.  

The university achieved its strongest performance in Medical and Health, ranking 601–800 worldwide and joint third in Thailand. This shows a significant improvement from last year’s position of 801–1000 globally and fourth nationally. The 2025 Medical and Health table features 1,150 institutions from 102 countries, up from 1,059 universities last year, with 14 Thai universities included.  

Walailak University also made a remarkable debut in Social Sciences, ranking 601–800 globally and joint third in Thailand. This is an impressive milestone, as the subject was not ranked last year. The 2025 Social Sciences table includes 1,093 institutions from 100 countries, an increase from 997 universities in 2024, with eight Thai universities ranked.  

In Life Sciences, Walailak University maintained its global ranking of 801–1000 and its national position of joint ninth, as in 2024. This year’s rankings include 1,143 universities from 98 countries, up from 1,059 universities last year, with 17 Thai universities included.  

In Physical Sciences, Walailak University retained its global ranking at 1001+, while improving its national position from joint ninth last year to joint eighth in 2025. The 2025 subject table features 1,447 institutions from 107 countries, compared to 1,370 universities in 2024, with 19 Thai universities ranked.  

Lastly, in Engineering, the university made its first appearance in the rankings, securing a position of 1001–1250 globally and joint ninth in Thailand. The 2025 table includes 1,488 institutions from 97 countries, up from 1,374 universities last year, with 16 Thai universities ranked.  

The 2025 THE Rankings by Subject, released today at 7 AM Thailand time, utilize the same 18 well-calibrated indicators under five key pillars as the overall World University Rankings: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and International Outlook. However, the weightings of these pillars are adjusted to reflect the unique characteristics of each subject.  

The 11 subject tables, apart from the aforementioned areas, also include Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Education Studies, Law, and Psychology. To qualify for inclusion, universities must meet the required number of publications in each subject over the five-year period from 2019 to 2023 and have the minimum proportion or number of academic staff in each subject, as specified by THE.
