Walailak University English Edutainment “PlearnEnglish” Grandly Opens at ST Building

The English edutainment program for Walailak University students to enhance their English communicative skills has officially opened today at the ST Building after its launch three weeks ago and received highly positive feedback from students.

Play and Learn PlearnEnglish – English is All Fun combines both education and entertainment, providing students with learning opportunities that are engaging and fun. Students can participate in an informal environment, where they feel less pressure, and join fun activities with their peers, such as crossword puzzles, English debates, academic English competitions, and Jenga - a puzzle game where blocks are stacked to create a tower.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, who presided over the grand opening event, said that he is honored to be here to officially launch the program, which was designed to make learning English both effective and fun.

“Edutainment complements our formal English courses, reinforcing our commitment to improving students’ language skills. At Walailak University, we take great pride in offering 270 hours of English instruction - the most in Thailand. Our small class sizes of just 25 students ensure active participation, and our 51 international lecturers at the School of Languages and General Education work hard to support students in mastering English,” said President Sombat.

Organized by the School of Languages and General Education in collaboration with the Division of Student Support and Development, Play and Learn PlearnEnglish takes place every Friday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the ST Building throughout the semester.

Today’s event drew over a hundred students, along with university executives from various organizations who came to show their support. A highlight of the opening was the storytelling competition, where 10 participants took turns sharing their stories in English, enhancing their language skills, confidence, and creativity. The first-place winner was Mr. Ilyas Sulong, a first-year student from the English Education Program, the School of Education.

Mr. Ilyas shared that he learned about the event from his teacher and was eager to participate. “I feel honored and truly appreciate this event for giving me such a great opportunity. I am delighted to be the winner today. Participating in this event has helped me increase my confidence and step out of my comfort zone. It challenged me - I had to practice over and over, day and night, night and day. It also gave me a new perspective on how I see and study English as a language.”

Earlier this week, on Monday, students from the Universiti Malaysia Perlis School of Languages, Literacies, and Translation also joined the program. They played games with Thai students, exchanged cultural perspectives, and enjoyed the fun and interactive learning atmosphere. They plan to participate in the program through online activities as well.
