Walailak University Moves Up in Asian and Global Rankings, With Five Subject Areas Ranked Among Thailand’s Top Universities in SCImago 2025



Walailak University has reaffirmed its academic and research excellence, securing 12th place among 33 ranked Thai universities according to the recently released SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2025.

Despite maintaining its national ranking from the previous year, the university has made significant strides on both the Asian and global scales. In Asia, Walailak University has climbed to 641st out of 1,823 universities, improving from last year’s 738th out of 1,671. Globally, the university now ranks 1,854th out of 5,051 institutions, a jump from 2,094th out of 4,762 in 2024.

The SIR 2025 evaluates universities based on 20 indicators across three key criteria: Research (50%), Innovation (30%), and Societal Impact (20%). In subject-specific rankings, Walailak University has secured positions among Thailand’s top eight across five academic disciplines:

1. Arts and Humanities – 2nd in Thailand, 63rd in Asia, and 579th worldwide.
2. Economics, Econometrics, and Finance – 3rd in Thailand, 195th in Asia, and 746th worldwide.
3. Veterinary – 8th in Thailand, 143rd in Asia, and 530th worldwide.
4. Business, Management, and Accounting – 8th in Thailand, 274th in Asia, and 1,066th worldwide.
5. Social Sciences – 8th in Thailand, 276th in Asia, and 1,142nd worldwide.

As one of Thailand’s 19 Global and Frontier Research Universities, as designated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), Walailak University remains committed to advancing research, fostering innovation, and driving societal impact. As of 28 February 2025, the university holds the highest proportion of Scopus-indexed publications in Thailand, with 82.6% in Quartile 1 (Q1) journals and 95.4% in Quartile 1 and 2 (Q1 & Q2) combined.

Additionally, the university’s various academic service projects have earned global recognition for their impact on society. These achievements include Walailak University’s ranking of 101-200 among over 2,000 universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024 for its contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Good Governance Award for Advocacy of Social Responsibility in Higher Education 2024, and the Excellence Award for Green Campus 2024, among others.
