Walailak University Visits Bhutanese Institutions, Discusses Double Degree Programs and Offers Scholarships to Bhutanese Students

Walailak University (WU), led by President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, visited Bhutan from 26 to 30 May 2025 to strengthen academic and research collaboration with leading institutions in the country.

On 26 May, President Sombat and the WU delegation - comprising Assistant Professor Dr. Patnarin Supakorn, Director of the Center for International Affairs, and Associate Professor Dr. Worawan Panpipat, Dean of the School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry - met with officials from His Majesty’s Secretariat, led by Deputy Royal Chamberlains Namgay Rinchen and Kunzang Dorji, as well as Vice Chancellor Mr. Chewang Rinzin of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

During the visit, President Sombat introduced Walailak University through a presentation video and shared opportunities for academic mobility and research collaboration. He also officially announced scholarships for qualified Bhutanese students, including three undergraduate scholarships for the 2026 academic year in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Doctor of Dental Surgery, and Medical Technology programs; graduate-level scholarships for eligible Bhutanese students under the criteria set by WU’s Graduate School; and semester exchange opportunities through Walailak University International College.

In addition, RUB representatives from four colleges - College of Science and Technology, Jigme Namgyel Engineering College, Gyalpozhing College of Information and Technology, and Gedu College of Business Studies - participated in academic discussions. RUB expressed keen interest in developing double degree programs with WU, such as a 2+2 model (two years at RUB and two years at WU) and a five-year integrated bachelor’s and master’s program. These collaborative programs are expected not only to provide high-quality education to students but also to enhance Walailak University’s internationalization efforts and global standing.
