Walailak University (WU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT), a leading university in Taiwan, to promote collaboration in education, research, and internship opportunities. The signing ceremony took place today at the Chorpradu Chamber, Walailak University Hospital.
Representing WU in welcoming the delegation from NKUHT were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charun Bunyakan, Vice President; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siwarit Pongsakornrungsilp, Vice President; Asst. Prof. Dr. Pimlapas Pongsakornrungsilp, Dean of the School of Management; and Asst. Prof. Dr. Patnarin Supakorn, Director of the Center for International Affairs. The NKUHT delegation was led by Dr. Dun-Ji Chen, President of NKUHT.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charun Bunyakan expressed his pleasure and honor in welcoming the distinguished guests from NKUHT. “Your presence here reflects the strengthening relationship and shared goals between our two universities,” he said. “This MoU formalizes a partnership already strengthened by academic exchanges and shared values, particularly in hospitality, tourism, and related fields.”
The signing of the MoU follows the School of Management’s visit to NKUHT earlier in April. In June, 50 students and faculty members from the Professional Culinary Arts Program participated in a two-week study abroad program at NKUHT. This October, 35 students from the Digital Marketing and Branding Program are scheduled to take part in a one-month program at NKUHT. Additionally, students from the Tourism Management and Hotel Program, as well as the Logistics Management Program, are preparing for internships at the Taiwanese university.
“These accomplishments, both past and prospective, are powerful indicators of the profound impact our collaborative efforts can have in advancing knowledge, fostering cultural understanding, and preparing our students for a globalized world,” added Assoc. Prof. Dr. Charun.
Dr. Dun-Ji Chen, President of NKUHT, expressed his delight at the official signing of the MoU after both institutions had already begun collaborative activities, especially student and faculty exchanges, over the past few months. He stated that the MoU would pave the way for closer and more frequent cooperation, including research initiatives.
During the ceremony, President Chen also emphasized the importance of student internships that provide hands-on experience and equip graduates with practical skills. He further praised WU’s teaching and learning approach, which is based on the UK Professional Standards Framework.
The MoU, signed by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of WU, and Dr. Dun-Ji Chen, President of NKUHT, goes beyond student internships and faculty exchanges. It also aims to promote program articulation, short-term academic programs, staff development initiatives, and joint research projects.
This partnership not only enhances academic and professional development for students and staff but also marks a significant step forward in strengthening Walailak University’s international cooperation and global engagement with leading institutions around the world.
