Walailak University and Showa Medical University Sign MoU to Advance Medical Education and Research Collaboration

Walailak University (WU), through its School of Medicine, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Showa Medical University, Japan - one of the country’s most respected medical institutions. The ceremony took place today (2 December 2025) at the 40-seat Conference Room of the School of Medicine at Walailak University Hospital.

Signing the MoU on behalf of WU was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chuchard Punsawad, Dean of the School of Medicine. Signing on behalf of Showa Medical University were Prof. Akatsuki Kokaze, Dean of the School of Medicine, and Prof. Takashi Miyazaki, Director General of the International Exchange Center. Although Prof. Akatsuki Kokaze and Prof. Takashi Miyazaki had signed the MoU in advance and were unable to attend the ceremony in person, Showa Medical University was represented by Prof. Takaaki Matsuyama, Chair of the International Exchange Center.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chuchard Punsawad said that the collaboration between the two institutions focuses on three key areas: student exchange, academic exchange, and joint research. He expressed deep appreciation for the partnership and emphasized its importance in elevating medical education and research.

“We have already agreed on a medical student exchange program, which will allow both our students to gain international experience, learn from new healthcare environments, and observe different medical service systems,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chuchard.

“Showa Medical University has also integrated AI into several aspects of clinical care, including AI-assisted surgery. This will give our students the opportunity to experience advanced medical technologies firsthand.”

He added that another major component of the cooperation is research. Showa Medical University operates multiple research centers - both clinical and medical science - which provides a strong foundation for collaborative research projects between the two institutions.

“This will strengthen our research capabilities and expand opportunities for our faculty and students,” he said.

Under the MoU, both universities will also collaborate in the further training of faculty; the exchange of scholarly materials and information; and joint participation in international conferences, seminars, symposia, short-term academic programs, and academic meetings. The partnership strengthens long-term academic engagement and paves the way for impactful cross-cultural learning opportunities.

This collaboration marks an important step in advancing Walailak University's internationalization efforts and enhancing its position as a growing center of medical education and research excellence.
