Walailak University Partners with Northern Giants CMU and MJU for Cross-Regional Research and Exchange

Walailak University (WU), Chiang Mai University (CMU), and Maejo University (MJU) have engaged in knowledge exchange discussions aimed at promoting cross-regional student exchange and collaborative research.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, together with the university’s senior executive team, visited Chiang Mai Province to hold academic collaboration talks with Professor Dr. Pongruk Sribanditmongkol, President of Chiang Mai University, at the CMU President’s Office, and Associate Professor Dr. Weerapon Thongma, President of Maejo University, at the MJU President’s Office. The meetings took place on 9 January 2026, with the shared objective of driving strategic cooperation networks among leading higher education institutions in Thailand’s northern and southern regions.

Executives from all three universities explored future collaboration through two key dimensions. The first focuses on enhancing cross-regional learning experiences through the development of student exchange programs and a credit transfer system. This initiative aims to provide students with opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary and cross-cultural learning between the North and the South, with academic results mutually recognized by the participating institutions. The approach is expected to strengthen students’ skills and life experiences, preparing them for the demands of the modern world.

The second dimension centers on research collaboration for sustainability, with an initial emphasis on Blue Carbon research and mangrove ecosystem management. This joint research effort seeks to generate knowledge that contributes to addressing environmental challenges while also creating added economic value.

This exchange of ideas and experiences marks an important opportunity for WU to adopt and adapt successful concepts and operational models from CMU and MJU. The collaboration is expected to further enhance WU’s institutional performance and support its continued progress toward becoming a leading quality university at the international level.
