Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, attended the 16th Council of University Presidents of Thailand (CUPT) – Council of Rectors of Indonesian State Universities (CRISU) Conference, held from 24–27 August 2025 at the Nusantara Capital Authority Headquarters (Kantor Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara – IKN) in Pemaluan, Sepaku District, Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Authority is the key agency responsible for developing Indonesia’s new capital city, IKN, also known as the City Hall of Nusantara.

Key highlights of the conference, held under the themes “Food Sovereignty and Security” and “Leadership for Sustainable Future in Nusantara”, included: a keynote lecture by Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education and Technology; a High-Level Meeting with ministers and university presidents from Thailand and Indonesia; parallel sessions for senior executives; student engagement activities; and a tree-planting initiative promoting sustainability.

The CUPT–CRISU Conference, first launched in 2010, serves as a platform for higher education cooperation between CUPT and CRISU.

The conference was established to strengthen academic collaboration through student and faculty exchanges, joint research, and policy development supporting sustainable higher education in ASEAN. It is held annually, alternating between Thailand and Indonesia, with the goal of fostering strategic partnerships between universities of both countries within the ASEAN context.
