Walailak University Deepens Academic Ties with Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania to Promote Research and Student Mobility

Walailak University President, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, visited Transilvania University of Brasov, Romania, between 4-5 September 2025 to strengthen academic cooperation. The visit follows initial discussions at the International Education Fair “Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) 2025” in New Delhi, which led to the development of a Memorandum of Understanding and plans to sign an Erasmus+ agreement supporting staff and student mobility. 

During the visit, President Sombat met with Rector Prof. Dr. Eng. Ioan Vasile Abrudan and Vice-Rector Dr. Daniel Munteanu to discuss expanding collaboration in research, student exchange, and staff mobility. He also held discussions with senior academics from several faculties. 



At the Faculty of Food and Tourism, Dean Prof. Dr. Vasile Pădurean and colleagues introduced opportunities for collaboration, including participation in the international conference EARTH 2025 – Experiences and Innovation for Sustainable Food and Tourism, as well as English-taught master’s programs such as Gastronomic Engineering and Engineering and Management in Luxury Hospitality. 

At the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Titus Constantin Balan expressed interest in joint research publications with Walailak University’s School of Engineering in the fields of computer science and artificial intelligence. 

The Faculty of Economic Sciences and Business Administration, represented by Vice-Dean Prof. Dr. Radu Lixăndroiu and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dana Lupsa, emphasized the development of Erasmus+ cooperation with Walailak University’s School of Management and School of Accountancy and Finance. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Sociology and Communication, led by Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Horia Moasa, shared expertise in communication for social change.





President Sombat also toured the Research-Development Institute for High-Tech Products for Sustainable Development Technological and Business Incubator, where he learned about projects such as the use of augmented reality for construction.

Transilvania University, ranked in the 1201+ band of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 alongside Walailak University, is a comprehensive institution with over 20,000 students across 18 faculties. Under the leadership of Rector Abrudan, the university has become well known for research, innovation, and multi-disciplinary programs that combine technology with applied fields, including initiatives applying artificial intelligence to tourism and developing food innovations such as chocolate and wine technologies. The university also provides international opportunities through scholarships for students and fellowships for staff mobility, including programs for postdoctoral researchers, visiting professors, and doctoral graduates.
