On October 3, 2025, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, presided over the foundation-laying ceremony for the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Promotion Building, marking the start of construction for a new facility that will serve as a hub for innovation incubation and knowledge-based economic development in upper southern Thailand.

The event, held at the construction site north of the Walailak University Science and Technology Park, was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Anurak Thungthong, Director of the Science and Technology Park, university executives and staff, Mr. Ekapong Musikacharoen, Director of the Science, Research and Innovation Promotion and Utilization Division, together with representatives from the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), the private sector, partner universities, and distinguished guests.

According to Mr. Ekapong, the project stems from a resolution of a mobile Cabinet meeting in Ranong Province. Walailak University proposed the construction under the policy of Professor Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of MHESI, who emphasizes maximizing the use of scientific, research, and innovation infrastructures at universities nationwide. The new facility will support entrepreneurs in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Ranong.

Mr. Ekapong further said that this building is the seventh facility established under the initiative to promote the development of science, research, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship. As a leading research university, Walailak University has produced numerous outstanding and practical research outcomes that local entrepreneurs can leverage.

“Similar buildings have already been established in nearly every region of the country, including Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Songkhla, and Nakhon Ratchasima. These form a network of regional science parks. We are hopeful that, on this auspicious occasion of the foundation-laying ceremony, entrepreneurs in this region will benefit from the facility within the next 17 months. I also encourage entrepreneurs, researchers, and all interested individuals to take full advantage of this facility and maximize its potential, in line with the government’s investment,” said Mr. Ekapong.

The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Promotion Building Project has received government funding of 313,101,700 baht for the fiscal year 2024. The new building will play a crucial role in supporting research, development, and the transformation of knowledge into practical innovations, fostering close collaboration with local entrepreneurs, and generating long-term positive impacts at the community, regional, and national levels. The construction is expected to be completed by 2027.
