Walailak University has officially received the host flag for the 52nd University Games of Thailand, “Tumpang Games,” succeeding Maejo University. The University is preparing to welcome student-athletes from more than 100 institutions nationwide when the competition takes place in late January next year.

On 9 January 2026, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, together with the University’s executive team, staff, and students, formally received the host flag for the 52nd University Games of Thailand. The flag was presented by Associate Professor Dr. Chusit Pradabpet, President of the University Sports Board of Thailand, and Associate Professor Dr. Weerapon Thongma, President of Maejo University, during the opening ceremony of the 51st University Games of Thailand, “Inthanin Games,” held at the Chalerm Phrakiat Sports Center, Maejo University, Chiang Mai Province.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong stated that Walailak University has made thorough preparations in all areas, including competition venues, standard sports fields and sports facilities, amenities, personnel, students, and management systems. The University is fully ready to welcome athletes, officials, and participants from institutions nationwide, ensuring convenience, safety, and a memorable experience for all.

He emphasized that Walailak University is committed to carrying forward the spirit of the Games as a platform for friendship, unity, and the advancement of sports toward higher standards. Athletes, officials, and participants are also invited to explore what is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in Thailand during their free time or after daily competitions. Highlights include various scenic check-in spots, the SIRIN Museum, and the Southern Thai art and culture learning center – home to the ancient Tumpang archaeological site (dating back to approximately the 12th–13th Buddhist centuries), which inspired the name “Tumpang Games.”

The 52nd University Games of Thailand “Tumpang Games” will be held from 21–30 January 2027 under the theme “Spirit of Equality, Glory of Excellence.” The Games will feature more than 30 sports disciplines, including compulsory sports, international optional sports, general optional sports, demonstration sports, and traditional Thai sports.
