Between 15–19 January 2026, Walailak University, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onanong Cheablam and staff from the Center for Academic Services (CAS), collaborated with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), the Office of Provincial Commercial Affairs Krabi, Krabi Provincial Fisheries Office, and the Krabi Land Development Department to organize a series of meetings with giant tiger prawn farmers in Krabi Province. The meetings aimed to discuss the promotion of Krabi Giant Tiger Prawn for Geographical Indication (GI) registration in order to enhance product value and strengthen the identity of local fishery products.

In addition, Walailak University and its partners conducted site visits to Krabi Giant Tiger Prawn farming areas to collect data and interview farmers regarding traditional cultivation practices, soil and water conditions, and distribution systems. The information gathered will be compiled into a comprehensive database to support the preparation of a future GI registration application with the Department of Intellectual Property.

Walailak University and its partners recognize that promoting Krabi Giant Tiger Prawn through GI registration is crucial for preventing brand impersonation, assuring product quality, and highlighting its distinctive characteristics. This initiative is expected to generate income for local farmers and sustainably strengthen the grassroots economy of Krabi Province.
