Walailak University (WU), Thailand, and Universitas Siliwangi (UNSIL), Indonesia, formally strengthened their academic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 11 February 2026 at the Mokhalan Meeting Room, located in the Professor Dr. Wichit Srisa-an Building, Walailak University.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Nundang Busaeri, Rector of Universitas Siliwangi, in the presence of executives and representatives from both institutions.

This agreement marks an important step in fostering international collaboration between the two universities, particularly in promoting international teaching practicum opportunities for teacher education students from both institutions. The partnership also extends to research collaboration, academic exchanges, and the organization of joint conferences and workshops.

Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong said that the signing of this MoU represents an important milestone in the growing relationship between the two institutions and reflects their shared commitment to strengthening international collaboration in education, research, and academic exchange.

“It is a meaningful step toward fostering mutual understanding, knowledge sharing, and long-term partnership for the benefit of our students, faculty members, and academic communities. These initiatives will not only enhance academic excellence but also contribute to regional and global development, particularly within the ASEAN region,” he added.

The collaboration builds upon prior engagement between the two institutions. In November 2025, Dr. Yusup Supriyono, Head of the English Department at UNSIL, visited Walailak University’s School of Education and School of Liberal Arts to explore potential collaboration, particularly in student mobility for teacher education students seeking teaching experience in Thailand.

Currently, students from UNSIL are undertaking their teaching practicum in schools in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Krabi provinces, enhancing their professional teaching experience while immersing themselves in Thai culture.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Nundang Busaeri stated that UNSIL actively promotes international cooperation to broaden the perspectives of both students and lecturers.

“We see Walailak University as an important and strategic partner. Indonesia and Thailand share similar values, cultural closeness, and a common commitment to advancing education in Southeast Asia. We believe that cooperation between our universities through student and teacher exchanges, visiting lecturers, joint research, and community-based programs will bring mutual benefit and long-term impact.”

Universitas Siliwangi, a public university located in Tasikmalaya, West Java, is well known for its strengths in teacher education, engineering, agriculture, economics and business, public health, and social sciences. The university is recognized for its commitment to regional development through education, applied research, and community engagement, and has been actively expanding its international partnerships to enhance academic quality and global engagement.

The signing of the MoU reflects Walailak University’s continued efforts to expand its international network and create meaningful global partnerships that contribute to academic excellence and regional development.
