Walailak University held a three-religion merit-making ceremony, a royal decoration presentation ceremony before the royal portrait of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and an award ceremony honoring outstanding personnel and distinguished alumni to mark the 34th Anniversary of the Establishment of Walailak University.

On 27 March 2025 at 8:30 a.m., Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and Mr. Teerachai Chemnasiri, Chairman of the Walailak University Council, presided over a merit-making ceremony in which rice and dry food were offered to 34 Buddhist monks. The ceremony also included a dedication of merit to Professor Dr. Wichit Srisa-an, Late Founding President and Former Council Chairman, who made significant contributions to the university, as well as to deceased faculty members, staff, and students.

The event further featured an Islamic du’a prayer and a Christian blessing prayer for the university’s executives, personnel, and students on this auspicious occasion.

Among the attendees were Mr. Suwat Chansuk, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province; heads of government offices in Tha Sala District and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province; as well as university executives, faculty members, staff, and students. The ceremony was held at the Thaiburi Building, Walailak University.

On the occasion of the university’s 34th anniversary, Mr. Teerachai Chemnasiri, Chairman of the Walailak University Council, extended his congratulations and appreciation to the university community. He noted that the university’s achievements are the result of the dedication, commitment, and tireless efforts of its administrators, faculty members, and staff, enabling Walailak University to gain international recognition and advance toward becoming a quality university with strong academic and research excellence.

Looking ahead, the university has set even more ambitious goals. In 2027, which will mark the 35th anniversary of the university’s establishment, Walailak University plans to organize major celebratory activities while continuing to advance its mission toward becoming one of the top five leading universities in Thailand.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, also delivered a special address titled “Nine Years of Transformation.” He stated that over the past 34 years—particularly during the last nine years—the university has adopted a proactive management approach to address challenges and significantly elevate the quality of education and research to international standards.

Currently, Walailak University is ranked 1201+ globally and 6th in Thailand by Times Higher Education. The university aims to move into the 1001+ global ranking and 4th in Thailand within the next two years.

“Walailak University has brought recognition to Thailand by achieving No. 1 in the world for Gender Equality (SDG 5) in the THE Impact Rankings. The university has also maintained its position as a Green University, ranked 82nd in the world and No. 1 in Southern Thailand for six consecutive years, reflecting its commitment to environmentally friendly development alongside academic excellence,” Professor Sombat said.

He further noted that the university has successfully addressed challenges in teaching and learning. Previously, the student dropout rate was as high as 36 percent, but it has now been reduced to zero percent through a systematic screening and close student support system. As a result, confidence in the university has grown significantly. In the first round of TCAS69 admissions, as many as 37,000 applicants applied to Walailak University, with admitted students achieving an average GPAX of 3.44.

“Walailak University remains committed to advancing under its vision of becoming a World-Class Comprehensive Research University. The university aims to serve as a key mechanism for developing human resources, advancing knowledge, and strengthening the economy of Southern Thailand and the nation, enabling them to move forward on the global stage,” Professor Sombat concluded.

The event also included a royal decoration presentation ceremony before the royal portrait of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn for the year 2025, the presentation of gold plaques honoring personnel who have served the university for 25 consecutive years, tokens of appreciation for those who have served 30 years or more, and the presentation of Distinguished Alumni Awards.
