Walailak University (WU) has been named the top green university in Southern Thailand for the seventh consecutive year, according to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2026. The university also advanced in the global standings, rising to 77^th place worldwide — up from a joint 82^nd position the previous year.

Nationally, WU has held 6^th place among Thai universities since 2023.

The university's overall score has climbed steadily over the past four years — from 8,475 points in 2023, to 8,575 in 2024, to 8,700 in 2025, and now 8,812.5 points in 2026.

This year's rankings assessed universities across seven criteria: Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transportation (TR), Education and Research (ED), and — newly introduced for 2026 — Governance and Digitalization (GD).

In Setting and Infrastructure (SI), the university placed joint 5^th in the world and 1^st in Thailand for the fifth consecutive year. It also secured joint 2^nd nationally in Water (WR) and joint 4^th nationally in Transportation (TR). 

Commenting on the results, Asst. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, Director of the Center for Academic Services, said: "Walailak University’s achievement of being ranked 77^th in the world, the No. 1 Green University in Southern Thailand, and No.1 in Thailand for Setting and Infrastructure for five consecutive years reflects our strong commitment to sustainable development."

Prof. Dr. Amonsak.

The results form part of the 17^th edition of the UI GreenMetric rankings, which this year assessed 2,016 institutions across 110 countries — including 65 universities from Thailand.
