The 2nd Walailak University Cultural Camp: Cultures without Borders



In honor of HRH Princess Chulabhorn Walailak, Walailak University is organizing the 2ndWalailak University Cultural Camp 2018 (WUCC 2018) under the theme “Cultures without Borders”. One hundred and sixty international students from 50 countries worldwide joined the camp.



Prof. Dr. SombatThamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University revealed that Walailak University is striving for world-class excellence. In response to the need of recognized professional standards for faculty development, the university has adopted the United Kingdom Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) for teaching and supporting learning across the campus. The President stated that with the great awareness of the importance of improving students’ English communication skills, Walailak University Language Institute (WULI) has currently been established to enhance the students’ English language skills.Moreover, the university supportsits students by providing opportunity to work with oversea enterprise partners in orderto obtain international work experiences. In the aspect of Thai culture promotion, WU encourages its students to engage with cultural interaction activities by organizing international gathering events to provide global exposure for the students.President Sombat said that in 2017, the university organized the 1stWalailak University Cultural Camp to provide opportunity for establishing cross-cultural friendship among worldwide participants and itwas very attractive camp for many international students—110 students from 21 countries joined the first camp. This year, the 2ndWalailak University Cultural Camp will be held during 16 to 23 June 2018, under the theme “In honor of HRH Princess Chulabhorn Walailak: Cultures without Borders”. The main objective of the camp is to promote Thai culture which is one of national identities to international tourists’ perception by publicizing Thailand as an attractive tourist destination to worldwide travelers. Moreover, it is an opportunity forboth Thai and international students tobuild good relationships and student collaborative network—onecan be a cultural representative of their own country while enhancing their English communication ability in real life situations. On top of that, this camp project also responds to Thai Government Policyunder the campaign “Amazing Thailand Go Local” aiming at spreading benefits of tourism across local communities and secondary tourist cities in the 55 provinces. The WUCC brings worldwide participants to Nakhon Si Thammarat which isone of those 55 secondary provinces.



Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongsathorn Dechatiwongse Na Ayuthaya, Director of Center for International Affairs (CIA), as a Camp Director said that in this year there are more than 750 international students from 300 universities, 50 countries, 5 continents around the world are interested to join the camp. There are only 160 eligible students have been selected to join the8-day camp. During the first 5 days, 16-20 June 2018 at Walailak University, the camp providesmany engaging activities such as cultural performances from 25 groups of student, Thai culture appreciation (Thai Cooking Class, Thai Boxing, Thai Dancing and Thai Music), Camp Fire Activity, Beach Combing atKhanom Beach, Nakhon Si Thammarat’s City Tour, visiting WatPhraMahathat—temple of the great pagoda, cruising along Pakpanang River, and traveling by train to Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand. The rest three days, 21-23 June 2018, the participants are arranged visitingWatPhraKaewand Grand Palace and also paying a courtesy call to the Minister of Culture. The camp closing ceremony will be held on the evening of 22 June 2018. All participants are required to prepare their own cultural performances under the theme “Cultures without Borders” which will show a harmonious combination of worldwide cultures.

The CIA Director also stated that the main objective of the WUCC camp project is to develop global youths in terms of understanding cultural differences, skin complexion and beliefs of the countries in the world and therefore they will learn to live and work together peacefully for sustainable advancement of the world society.
