Walailak University achieving 500+

Walailak University is celebrating a recently updated number of the UKPSF-certified faculties, 500+ record. This new record confirms the university’s dedication to enhancing students’ learning, teaching and learning culture on the part of the lecturers. This achievement is in line with the global standard of quality.

On 23rd June 2022, Advance Higher Education (Advance HE) having collaborated with Walailak University over the course of five years, starting in 2018 has updated the figures of HEA Fellows (HEA is the name of fellowship while AHE is the organization awarding the HEA Fellowship). Walailak University’s number of HEA fellows has reached a total of over 500, within one year, making it the university with the most UKPSF-certified faculties in Thailand and second globally. The record is attributed to an increase of 10 Fellows, from 433 to 443 Fellows, while there are 57 Senior Fellows and 1 Principal Fellow.

Championed by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, the university has been working with the Advance HE through four Fellowship training programs to improve the quality of teaching and learning.  Teaching staff continuously participated in the teaching and learning development program, the Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CLTHE) program aligned with the Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE (PSF), designed by UK universities.

The Advance HE has previously published a Success Story on the university’s achievement with a tangible proof of over 90% of the staff gaining recognition of an HEA fellow in diverse fields. The institute capitalized on an integration of the practices having addressed a number of issues such as freshmen’s reduced dropouts in 2020 from 30 percent to less than 2 percent. More importantly, “the culture of teaching”, among the teaching staff, has been generalized as reflected by Walailak University’s Vice President for Global Engagement and Faculty Development, Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod.

“There is now a culture of teaching at Walailak University. Before this work, staff did not talk about teaching, whereas now you can hear them discussing their teaching in everyday conversations. Student’s learning is at the heart of all our work, “reflected by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surin.
