Walailak University joining hands with Fujian Open University, the Republic of China, in the establishment of the ASEAN-Bangkok Learning Center, College of Overseas Chinese, Walailak University Center

    On June 28, 2022, Walailak University under collaboration with Fujian Open University, the Republic of China officially marked the inception of the ASEAN-Bangkok Learning Center, College of Overseas Chinese, Walailak University Center operating for educational collaboration between Thailand and China and endorsement of the “One Belt, One Road” policy among ASEAN fellows. The ceremony started with the unveiling of the center’s sign and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Sri Thammarat Meeting Room, Architecture and Design Building, 3rd Floor, Walailak University. Attendees could also attend a virtual meeting at Bohou Building Auditorium, the Fujian Open University the Guishan Campus People's Republic of China.


     On this occasion, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voravuth Somsak and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Acting Vice President of Walailak University attended the ceremony to welcome Mr. Pinit Jarusombat, Thailand’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council for the Promotion of Thai – Chinese Culture and Relations, Mr. Prakob Ratanaphan, chairman of the Education Committee, House of Representatives and Dr. Patcharinruja Chantaronanon, Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voravuth delivered a speech along with a delegation from China including Mr.Chen Xingyan, Mr.Wu Guorong, Mr. Ma Chengbin, and Mr.Li Zhengguang.

   

     Joining the ceremony were also Mr. Wang Yang, Party Secretary and Deputy Director of Department of Education, Fujian Open University, Ms. Feng Junying, Charge d'affaires, Education Counsel, Chinese Embassy in Thailand, Mr. Chen Shihai, Vice President of the Overseas Chinese Confederation of China and President of the Fujian Provincial Overseas Chinese Confederation, Mr. Liu Jia,  Member of the Party Secretariat and Head of the Division, Deputy Director-General of the Fujian Provincial Department of Education and Mr. Huang Shaorong, Director of the Fujian Provincial Office of Foreign Affairs attending the opening ceremony and giving a speech. 


    Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voravuth stated that Walailak University is deeply honored to join hands with Fujian Open University in establishing the ASEAN-Bangkok Learning Center, Walailak University Center, College of Overseas Chinese for the purpose of educational enhancement, working to serve the region and contributing to economic development and producing graduates embodying internationally-recognized competence. In addition, the university aspires to systematize a model for knowledge exchange and forge high-level cooperation with Fujian Open University. The cooperation is intensively directed toward vocational education, the Chinese language Studies, research cooperation, and the exchange of staff and students in line with the policy “One Belt, One Road, One Belt, and the "Thailand 4.0" model. 

     Then, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Voravuth Somsak, Acting Vice President of Walailak University represented Walailak University in the signing of an MOU with Fujian Open University led by Mr. Wu Guorong, President of Fujian Open University. Witnessing the signing was Mr. Suthikon Jearaphaitoon from Open Education Group (Thailand) Co., Ltd. This five-year effective cooperation capitalizes on exchange and cooperation in education between China and Thailand, seeking post-pandemic paths toward China-Thailand Open Education Cooperation, promoting language learning and cultural exchange, and formal diploma and certificate programs. This Memorandum of Understanding is valid for 5 years from the date of signing.


    After that, the guests joined a sign unveiling of the ASEAN Learning Center – Bangkok, College of Overseas Chinese, Walailak University Center, and the activities of the Chinese tea culture workshop for Chinese major students, Walailak University, with Mr. Li Zhengguang, Vice President of Fujian Open University presiding over the opening of this workshop. 


    Fujian positions itself at the forefront of the Republic of China's opening up and inception of the Maritime Silk Road. Fujian Open University is a pioneer in continuing education and lifelong learning in China playing a substantial role in the regional economic and social development. The university’s first center in Thailand was established in Bangkok as Walailak University center. The mission is to implement strategic cooperation with Thai universities and Open Education Group (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in several areas of disciplines using information technology for cutting-edge education as well as an integration of an innovative model "Internet + Chinese" to knowledge sharing between Thai and Chinese educational institutions.
