 Walailak University’s School of Engineering and Technology joining hands with PetroMat to create a research network to drive the country’s economy and support the south’s industries 


     School of Engineering and Technology, Walailak University, Petro-Polymer program organizes PetroMatNetworking@WU to celebrate its entry as a new member of the Center of Excellence on Petrochemicals and Materials Technology (PetroMat). The association is directed toward expanding collaboration in research, innovation and academic services, especially petrochemical, polymer materials and biomaterials to drive the nation’s academic growth and be in support of the upper south’s industrial growth. 


     On this occasion, Associate Prof. Dr. Sarawoot Palipoch, acting vice president of Walailak University, resided over the opening ceremony. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suratsavadee Koonlaboon Korkua, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology, gave a briefing on the goals. Dr. Hathaikarn Manuspiya, Director of PetroMat together with Dr. Boonyarach Kitiyanan, Deputy Director of PetroMat, members of the centers, faculties, personnel and students joined together to witness the event at the Petro-Polymer Building, Walailak University. 


     Associate Prof. Dr. Sarawoot Palipoch said, “the Petro-Polymer program, Walailak University is committed to producing high performing graduates to join the country’s development workforce. The goal is to strengthen research calibers and academic services to further it to industries and communities. This will altogether converge on building competitiveness and sustainability. ”


      Associate Prof. Dr. Sarawoot said further that the university realized the significance and benefits of promoting a cooperation network between the two institutes both in Thailand and overseas. Being part of the PetroMat center marks a milestone of the university’s solid research network aimed at developing research, innovation and academic services in Petrochemicals, polymer materials and biomaterials, especially to promote southern economy. 


     Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suratsavadee Koonlaboon Korkua, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology emphasized that the PetroMatNetworking@WU activity’s main objective is to officially launch the Petro-Polymer program, School of Engineering and Technology, Walailak University as a new member of PetroMat, which is one of the eleven centers of excellence afflicted with The Office of Graduate Studies and Research in Science and Technology Under the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. The Petrochemicals and Polymers program of Walailak University has joined research network on petrochemicals and polymers of the south for support in research and innovation. Also, personnel with expertise in petrochemicals and polymers will be ready to support the Eastern Special Development Zone industry and Chana Industrial Estate Project, Songkhla Province.

      “Petrochemical and Polymers Course is an undergraduate course operating under the School of Engineering and Technology. The program offers a revised curriculum open for the first batch of students in the Academic year 2020 to be in line with the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan, which is to equip the graduates with knowledge and ability to integrate the knowledge, scientific Engineering Process Technology and Mathematics It also responds to 10 targeted industries to drive the national economy and support the growth of the industry in the upper south according to the plan to develop the Southern Economic Corridor as well,” said Associate Professor Dr. Surasawadee.

       The PetroMatNetworking@WU Activity consists of ribbon cutting to open petrochemical and polymers laboratory allocated the budget for the year 2021 from Walailak University to improve the building for use in teaching of the course Petrochemicals and Polymer, laboratory visits and the Center of Excellence for Wood and Biomaterials. which is located within the area of The Center for Scientific and Technological Equipment, Walailak University. In addition, there are also research presentations conducted by faculties and researchers within the area of discipline and knowledge exchanges among researchers of both agencies. 


     The Center for Excellence in Petrochemical and Materials Technology (PETROMAT) was established in 1999 as an agency to promote research and development capabilities in Thailand. Currently, the center is an agency under the Office of Graduate Studies and Research Projects in Science and Technology under the Division of Promotion and Coordination for Scientific Benefits Research and Innovation, The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (NRSA). This has contributed to a network of researchers with knowledge and expertise in various fields to develop research work with more than 200 people from 9 institutes in Top 5 universities in the country.
