Best Green Campus in Thailand’s South: Walailak University Moves Up in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2023, Ranked 6th in Thailand, 83rd in the World 



Walailak University has been championing green campuses and the promotion of environmental sustainability in Thailand’s Southern region for four consecutive years, according to UI Greenmetric World University Rankings, recently released on 5 December 2023.

At the national level, the university is now ranked 6th among 55 Thai institutions, while on a global scale, it jumps to 83rd place among 1,183 universities worldwide.

Situated in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Walailak University has the largest single land area among Thai universities, totaling 3,600 acres. The university has been actively promoting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. 

In 2023, Walailak University participated in the Low Emission Support Scheme and successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by up to 7,926.252 tons of CO2 equivalent, earning a Letter of Recognition from Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Initiated in 2010 by Universitas Indonesia (UI), the UI Greenmetric World University Rankings use six criteria: (1) Setting and Infrastructure 15%, (2) Energy and Climate Change 21%, (3) Waste 18%, (4) Water 10%, (5) Transportation 18%, and (6) Education and Research 18% for assessing universities. Across these six criteria, Walailak University is ranked 1st in Thailand and 4th worldwide in Setting and Infrastructure, 7th nationally and 24th globally in Energy and Climate Change, 4th nationally and 6th globally in Waste, 2nd nationally and 3rd globally in Water, 2nd nationally and 4th globally in Transportation, and 11th nationally and 13th globally in Education and Research.

Additionally, in this year’s rankings, Walailak University received a total score of 8,475, showing a steady increase compared to the previous year at 8,125, and 7,700 in 2021.
