Walailak University (WU) has moved up to 501-600 in Asia, according to Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2024. At the national level, the university is ranked 12th out of top 19 Thai institutions.

The THE Asia University Rankings, recently released at 1:00 AM Thailand local time on May 1, include 739 research-intensive universities from 31 territories in Asia. The assessment covers all core missions of the university: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The methodology used in the THE Asia University Rankings is based on the same 18 performance indicators as those in THE World University Rankings, with adjusted weightings to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions.

Among the five areas of performance indicators—Research quality (30%), Research environment (28%), Teaching (24.5%), Industry (10%), and International outlook (7.5%)—Walailak University received the highest score in International outlook, followed by Research quality, Teaching, Industry, and Research Environment, respectively.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of WU, said Walailak University’s position in the THE Asia University Rankings this year has moved up to 501-600, from its previous ranking of 601+ in 2023. The university also recently received Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation’s outstanding award for excellence in internationally high-caliber research, and two prestigious Global Good Governance Awards for advocacy of social responsibility in higher education and excellence for green campus 2024.

“Walailak University is committed to advancing in every aspect. And our improved global rankings reflect the dedicated development efforts of everyone in our university. Parents and students can put their trust in our standards and take pride in our university's reputation,” remarked Professor Dr. Sombat.

In the THE Asia table this year, Tsinghua University from China tops the chart. Peking University from China comes in as the second place. And the National University of Singapore comes in the third place. In Thailand, Chulalongkorn University is ranked first in the nation, ranked 117th in Asia.

Recognized as one of Thailand's leading Global and Frontier Research Universities, Walailak University has shown improvement across all missions under the leadership of President Sombat Thamrongthanyawong.

In THE World University Rankings 2024, Walailak University has jumped to 1201-1500 worldwide, ranking joint 6th in Thailand, marking a significant milestone in its 32-year history. For its contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to THE Impact Rankings 2023, Walailak University was ranked at 401-600 globally, excelling in four SDGs: SDG2 (Zero Hunger), SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG14 (Life Below Water), among the world’s top 100 institutions.
