Walailak University (WU) and Tashkent University of Information Technologies (TUIT) in Uzbekistan have joined forces to promote student and staff mobility and advance research, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), and computer engineering.
On June 7, 2024, Walailak University, led by President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, welcomed delegates from TUIT: Dr. Tashev Kamil Akhmatovich, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs and Innovation; Professor Ibrohimbek Yusupov, Head of the Department for International Relations, International Rankings, and Strategic Development; and Dr. Ortiq Ruzibayev, Dean of the Faculty of Software Engineering, for a visit to the university. This marked the first visit by TUIT following a previous visit by the management team from WU in April.
"We are honored to welcome the Vice Rector and the team to Walailak University. It's a pleasure to have you here for this return visit, and I am confident that our universities will even foster closer relationships in the future," remarked Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong.
During collaborative discussions held at the Chorpradu Chamber, Assistant Professor Dr. Bukhoree Sahoh from WU's School of Informatics presented research on causal AI aimed at reducing the labor intensity and time consumption of medical professionals, addressing the shortage of physicians per population in Southeast Asian countries, which was noted as one to one thousand in a WHO survey conducted in 2023. Utilizing causal AI in biosensors to measure physiological signals in the human body can aid in detecting pain, temperature, and mental health conditions, and analyzing human behavior.
Assistant Professor Dr. Monthian Setkit, Dean of WU's School of Engineering Technology, mentioned that the school has been in contact with professors from TUIT since the visit in April, and exchanged research ideas. "We have mutual research interests, particularly in AI, computer engineering, and IoT. We have decided to collaborate in these areas first and hope to expand to include student and staff mobility in the future," he said.
After the meeting at the Chorpradu Chamber, the TUIT delegates were led on a tour of the School of Informatics' lab and the School of Engineering and Technology's lab. On June 8, they were given a campus tour, including visits to Walailak Botanic Park, Bota Sky Tower, and Walailak Park, before departing to Phuket.
