Advancing Internationalization at Home: WU CIA Organizes Movie Extravaganza Fostering Intercultural Awareness and Networking Among Students

Internationalization has been a key policy of Walailak University to pursue in order to enhance the quality of its operations and ensure it reaches international standards, whether in research or teaching and learning.

One of the benefits of internationalization, according to the 2023 survey by the International Association of Universities, is to enhance global, international, and intercultural knowledge, skills, and competencies for both students and staff.

That is why events like the International Movie Extravaganza, where Thai and international students have an opportunity to meet, are organized regularly on campus. Not only do these activities serve as a platform that helps create connections among students, but they also promote awareness and acceptance of differences.

Yesterday, at the Walailak University Center for Library and Educational Media, nearly 80 students gathered to watch the acclaimed film "Everything Everywhere All at Once," and enjoyed popcorn and soda. The event, organized by the Center for International Affairs (CIA), was attended by participants from 14 nations.

Assistant Professor Dr. Patnarin Supakorn, Director of the CIA, said that movies have long been a powerful medium for not only entertainment but also education. "They offer a unique opportunity to improve English language skills in an engaging and enjoyable manner."

"And through events like this, we foster mutual respect and understanding, equipping ourselves to navigate the intricacies of our globalized society," she added.

The event also featured a speech contest on themes inspired by the movie, such as "The Power of Choices and The Impact of Parallel Lives" and "The Butterfly Effect: How Small Actions Can Lead to Big Changes."

The results of the competition were: Mr. Addul Mateen, an international student from Pakistan in the School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry, won first place; Ms. Rehni Hussain, a student from Bangladesh in the College of Graduate Studies, secured second place; and Mr. Francis Walugembe, a student from Uganda in the School of Public Health, attained honorable mention.

The university’s efforts in promoting internationalization are not limited to on-campus activities. Partnerships with 102 institutions worldwide have actively promoted student and staff mobility. In terms of research, according to SciVal, over half of Walailak University's research up to July this year (59.6%) has involved collaboration with international researchers, showing a steady increase from 38.5% in 2021, 41.7% in 2022, and 55.7% in 2023.
