Walailak University President Sets Goal to Rank TOP 5 Nationally by 2027
Walailak University President, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, has set a goal to elevate the institution to rank in the TOP 5 nationally by 2027.
On August 11, 2024, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, presented the university's development over the past eight years during a retreat held between the University Council and the executive management of Walailak University, at Phattharathammaphorn Meeting Room, Walailak University Hospital.
Professor Dr. Sombat said that since 2016 when he assumed the position of President of Walailak University, he has implemented a development framework under a 20-year strategic plan. Through the dedicated efforts of everyone, the university has become recognized both nationally and internationally.
In particular, the university's continuous improvement in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings is noteworthy. Most recently, in 2024, Walailak University climbed to the 1201+ position globally and ranked joint 6th in Thailand.
Additionally, the university's achievement of receiving the 2023 Outstanding Award for Excellence in Internationally High-caliber Research, conferred by the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, further solidifies its reputation both domestically and internationally.
“The development of the university must continue in order to further elevate its world-class status. The goal is to rank in the Top 5 nationally in the Times Higher Education’s rankings by 2027. This is the next milestone that the university aims to achieve,” concluded Professor Dr. Sombat.
The retreat aimed to gather ideas and suggestions for drafting the university's strategic development plan for 2025-2027. The meeting involved input from members of the University Council and the university's executive team through both top-down and bottom-up approaches. This comprehensive process will guide the formulation of the annual operational and budget plans, as well as various projects, to enhance the university's chances of securing funding from various sources, including government, private sector, and other stakeholders, to support the university's initiatives.
