On 15 January 2026, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, presided over the Performance Agreement Signing Ceremony for the Fiscal Year 2026. The ceremony was attended by senior executives, including Vice Presidents, Assistants to the President, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Units from a total of 46 units, who jointly signed the agreements to drive the University’s operations toward achieving its goals. The event was held at Huataphan Conference Room, Walailak University Hospital.

Professor Dr. Sombat said that the signing of the Fiscal Year 2026 Performance Agreements by the University’s senior administrators represents a shared commitment to working collaboratively to steer Walailak University in line with its strategic plan and vision of becoming a leading world-class university. Particular emphasis is placed on excellence in research, with a strong focus on generating high-impact knowledge and innovation through the support of a robust research ecosystem, thereby elevating Walailak University to a fully-fledged research university with pride.

He further noted that Walailak University is currently ranked in the 1201+ band globally and 6th in Thailand. The University remains committed to enhancing quality across all dimensions to steadily improve its position in global university rankings, thereby strengthening its reputation and recognition at both national and international levels.

Professor Dr. Sombat emphasized that a renowned university possesses several key characteristics, one of the most important being the quality of its academic staff. This refers to having a high proportion of lecturers holding academic ranks, including Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors. At present, Walailak University has more than 800 academic staff members, of whom 59% hold academic positions.

The University has set a target that by 2028–2029, 70% of its academic staff will hold academic ranks. Encouragingly, Walailak University currently has eight professors who have already received royal approval of their appointments, with an additional eight awaiting royal endorsement. Therefore, a critical factor in advancing Walailak University toward becoming a prestigious institution is the presence of highly competent lecturers with academic titles.

The President also highlighted that, as a leader in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Walailak University places great importance on integrating the SDGs into teaching and learning, research, and community engagement. This integration aims to generate sustainable outcomes for surrounding communities and global society, in alignment with the standards of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

“Today, Walailak University has already achieved global recognition. However, I firmly believe that our global standing can continue to improve. We will further enhance Walailak University’s global ranking in the future. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all executives for their collective efforts in making Walailak University successful today, and I wish for our University to continue to grow and prosper even more in the years to come,” Professor Dr. Sombat concluded.

The Performance Agreement Signing Ceremony for Fiscal Year 2026 was organized by the Division of Human Resources and Organization in collaboration with internal units of the University. Senior executives, including Vice Presidents, Assistants to the President, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Units from all 46 units, participated in the signing. The ceremony underscored the University’s commitment to translating policies into concrete action and reaffirmed Walailak University’s determination to grow progressively, sustainably, and remain a reliable pillar of society in the future.
