Walailak University (WU) has retained its position in the 501–600 band in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2025. At the national level, WU has improved its standing, now ranked joint eighth among the 20 Thai institutions featured in the rankings. The announcement was made on 23 April 2025 at 11 PM Thailand time.
This year’s rankings include 853 universities from 35 territories across Asia, up from 739 universities from 31 territories in 2024. Although WU remains in the same ranking band as last year, its national standing has improved, rising from 12th to joint eighth this year.
The rankings assess university performance using 18 carefully calibrated indicators across five key areas: Research Quality (30%), Research Environment (volume, income, and reputation) (28%), Teaching (the learning environment) (24.5%), Industry (10%), and International Outlook (7.5%).
Walailak University achieved its highest score in Research Quality, followed by International Outlook, Teaching, Industry, and Research Environment, respectively.
Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, said, “Walailak University is committed to becoming an internationally recognized institution. We aim to instill confidence in parents and prospective students considering studying here, while also fostering a sense of pride among the Walailak community and all our students. With the strategic plan we are implementing to drive the university towards global recognition, I am confident that our rankings will continue to improve in the future.”
In Thailand, Chulalongkorn University is ranked first, placing 132nd in Asia, followed by Mahidol University (199th), and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (201–250). Regionally, Tsinghua University and Peking University from China take the first and second positions for the sixth consecutive year, with the National University of Singapore ranking third—also for the sixth year in a row.
In the THE World University Rankings 2025, WU is placed in the 1201–1500 range globally and ranks sixth in Thailand. In the THE Impact Rankings 2024, the university was placed in the 101–200 band globally and recognized among the world’s top 100 institutions in six Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG2 (Zero Hunger), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG14 (Life Below Water), and SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
