CAS Showcases Research and Academic Service Projects at “Mui Story: Samui Local Food Fest 2025”

14–15 March 2025 – Koh Samui, Thailand

The Center for Academic Services took part in Mui Story: Samui Local Food Fest 2025, showcasing its latest academic service projects and community-based research aimed at supporting sustainable tourism and local food systems on Koh Samui. The festival was held at the Hua Thanon Viewpoint in Maret Subdistrict, Koh Samui District, Surat Thani Province.

Leading the university delegation were Asst. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, Director of the Center for Academic Services, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laksanara Khwanchum, Deputy Director, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onanong Cheablam from the School of Management. The team presented research focused on empowering local communities, sustainable production, and eco-tourism.

The event, organised in collaboration with both public and private sector partners, was spearheaded by the President of the Samui Sustainable Community Enterprise. It aimed to promote local food heritage, raise awareness among Thai and international visitors, and drive Samui’s community-led economy. Key partners included the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), Walailak University, Bangkok Airways, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the District Chief and Mayor of Koh Samui, local leaders, hotel networks, community fishery groups, blue swimming crab banks from both Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani, and youth and influencer networks.

The festival featured exhibitions on Samui’s cultural identity, traditional way of life, and culinary heritage. Over 5,000 attendees, including both Thai and international tourists, took part in the vibrant two-day event, which included:

 - A contemporary art and cultural exhibition blending ideas from the past and present

 - Art booths highlighting environmental themes

 - Contemporary international music performances

 - Traditional folk performances, including: Manohra dance, Khon masked drama, Ramwong dance, Long drum parade

 - A nostalgic exhibition telling the story of Samui’s local cuisine, from the past to the present

 - 30 community booths showcasing local products

 - Live cooking demonstrations of traditional dishes using marine ingredients

Walailak University’s participation is part of a broader strategy to support grassroots economies through research and academic outreach. The university’s focus is on continuity and long-term sustainability—helping communities increase income, improve livelihoods, and reduce dependence through local knowledge and innovation.

The event aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger, by promoting food security, and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, through sustainable local food systems and eco-conscious practices.
