Walailak University is Now Ranked 14th in Thailand according to Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2024



Walailak University is now ranked 14th in Thailand, moving up from its previous year’s 15th position, according to the January edition of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2024.

On 30 January 2024, the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), announced the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2024 through www.webometrics.info. The result revealed that Walailak University holds the 14th place in Thailand among 192 Thai universities and is placed at 1,6222nd worldwide.

Looking at Walailak University's historical ranking statistics over the past six years, the university has shown consistent improvement. From 2018 to 2023, Walailak University was ranked 31st, 24th, 23rd, 19th, 15th and 15th, respectively among Thai universities, and achieved global rankings of 3,931st, 3,033rd, 2,951st, 2,379th, 1,814th, and 1,734th respectively.

Assistant Professor Dr. Fareeda Jeh-oh, Assistant to the President, said, “Walailak University, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, has implemented a policy to drive the Webometrics Ranking. The university established a committee for improving the operation of the university’s website since 2021, with the President as the advisor. This has contributed to the successful implementation of our plan, resulting in improved rankings over the past four years.” 

When considering Thai institutions alone, Chulalongkorn University tops chart and is ranked 414th globally. Chiang Mai University takes the 2nd place in Thailand and is 461st globally. And Mahidol University holds the 3rd place in Thailand and is ranked 504th in the world.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities measures the capability of being an "E-university" using three indicators: Visibility (50%), Transparency or Openness (10%), and Excellence (40%).

Visibility measures the number of external links leading to the institution's web pages. Transparency measures the number of citations of research works by researchers with data available in Google Scholar. And Excellence measures the number of papers and cited papers indexed in the SCImago database.
